Parting out a 1985 535i 5-speed

Post by KingstonZ »

Hello all. I recently bought a 1985 535i 5-speed with the hopes of fixing it up, but there is just too much chassis rust to revive her.

The car is a Cosmosblau over blue car. It was a runner until someone tried to steal the car and jacked up the ignition, and now the car has a no-spark condition.

I am saddened that this car cannot be saved, but hopefully it can help other cars live on.

I cannot seem to post pics here, but please feel free to PM me, or preferably text me at (816) 729-2768 for pics.

I am located in Kansas City, MO. I am willing to ship parts in the purchaser’s dime.

The car is pretty complete, and is 100% stock, except for the aftermarket radio. The paint on the trunk and sunroof is completely toast. The passenger front door and fender have significant rust.

The steering wheel is just stock and not worth having. The driver side comfort seat has a significant tear, but the passenger one seems OK. I have been using AMMO Mousse to condition it and the rear seats. The front seats are non-powered. The blue carpet has cleaned up pretty nicely. The blue center console stuff is in nice shape.

As I have the whole car, I don’t want to list all of the individual parts and pricing, but here are a couple of the big pieces:

Motor: $700 REDUCED TO $400
Tail lights: $125 for the set REDUCED TO $100 FOR THE PAIR
Wheels are the 14” Mahles: $250 for the set (needs to wait until I scrap the shell, however)
Manual pedal set: $150
Grills in great shape: $35 REDUCED To $20
New (aftermarket) kidney grill, $30 REDUCED TO $25
HVAC panel SOLD

Please let me know what else you might be interested and I will get you pics.

Thanks for looking everyone; this car may not have a future with me, but I have caught the E28 bug badly…I’ll be back!

That sucks, Kingston -- good luck!

I'd suggest selling the entire transmission setup as a swap kit.
I cannot seem to post pics here
Can you be more specific about this? We've clearly stated we have no pic hosting here and it has to be somewhere like Imgur.com or elsewhere, then posted via the "insert image" button.

If the good seat (pass side) is Pacific Blue comfort I would be interested in just the bottom if you get to the point you break things up. I would use it to replace my driver's bottom which is tearing up. Would also be interested in center console and the instrument cluster if it was working. My speedo died a long time ago for reasons I have not investigated.

OK, I figured out how to link photos from my Amazon account. Here are some pics of various parts of the car.

The windshield wiper reservoir, radio switch delete blank and straight intake elbow are pending sale. I have had several people reach out to me about the transmission, which has just over 188,xxx miles. I will be removing it from the car Sunday, and will get pictures then, and I will send them to everyone who has reached out to me.

Thank you!

It was my error. I was trying to link from my Amazon photo page, and I figured out what I was doing wrong.

The speedo was intermittent in the cluster. The center console is in very nice shape.

I am willing to sell the seat bottom for the passenger seat. I have posted some pics of it above.

Looking for the driver's side black cap - it houses the switch to control both outside mirrors.

I wanted to give everyone a little update.

The next 2 days I am unable to work in the car - going to have a couple of very long days at the day job Wednesday and Thursday. I will return to working in the car Friday.

The carpet is about ready to come out of the car. There is a faded spot on the driver side just behind the plastic floor pad, however. Other than that, the carpet is coming out pretty well!

The diff and driveshaft are still in the car; the driveshaft is tentatively sold, but I have to remove the rear of it from the diff still. Then I can drop the diff and find out if it is an LSD and what the ratio is.

I noticed the other day that the motor in the car has markings on it leading me to believe that it may not be the original motor. Certainly the oil pan looks to have come from a junkyard. Not sure if the whole engine did, or just the oil pan. As such, I am lowering the price of the motor to $400

I am doing my best to respond to everyone’s DMs, texts and emails. If you have not heard from me, please ping me again. Between all the responses here, and work being brutal right now, it is possible I have missed a message or 2.

Once this is all done, I will have a nice condition shop manual for sale for the car, too. :)

I think someone asked about the center console pieces. They are in VERY good shape, and I can get pics to anyone who is interested in them.

Thank you all for the kind words I have gotten from people on this board - what a great group!!

I'm interested in all parts needed for a manual swap- transmission, center console, pedal box, etc.
What would a price be for everything bundled together?
I'm located in Springfield, and could drive up there once I get the car running- just picked it up a few days ago.
