I would certainly hope it's the correct one since it's over $50.00 with shipping.

Just doing some research and found something curious. Does anybody know if the S38 thermostat is the same as the M30B34 (early model)? From photos it looks very similar (see the photo from page 1).

Some good information worth sharing from bigcoupe.com

Thermostat comparison. Old style on left, Stant 13558 that fits the A 4.1 housing; new on right, NAPA #148 (Stant 13588 equivalent, direct replacement for a BMW 11 53 1 713 040), fits the new housing A 4.2

As indicated earlier in this thread, real oem indicates 11531307737 (for S38) and the early model M30 part number is 11531254065 for E3, E9, E12, and early E24's/E28's before '85. It sure looks the same.

Mostly I wanted to include this detail regarding the early/late thermostats for the m30 because years ago I purchased the incorrect one not knowing there was a difference.

EDIT: The M5 thermostat is exclusive to the M5/M6.

Re: Check out my thermostat!

Post by alexdparsons »

I recently replaced the thermostat on my s38b35 thinking it couldn't hurt. According to the temperature gauge I was at times running a bit hot — dead noon when moving along with any speed, but in stop & go traffic inching up to 12:30 or 1pm. It's still not hot enough, I believe, for the aux fan to kick in so I thought maybe the thermostat was not popping open soon enough.

I verified that I have the right replacement stat (wahler ending in 737), and visually it looked identical to the original one I pulled out (BMW-marked Wahler ending, somewhat surprisingly, in 738). But something's amiss with my install as the engine is now running cool with any amount of speed / coolant pressure so it seems the stat is being bypassed.

A few things I wasn't certain of when doing the install (couldn't find a detailed description of how to do it anywhere, it's always presented as being so easy there's not much guidance):

• The Wahler replacement came with a flat (square edged) gasket that fits nicely on the inlet side of the stat, but the original had no washer here, so I didn't use it
• The replacement o-ring (ordered from Pelican based on etk / realoem part number) is definitely round, while what was left of the original gasket seemed to be square edged but maybe just from being compressed between the thermostat housings
• The original thermostat was nicely lodged into place, but the new one never seated well enough. I had to hold it in place as best I could while fitting the housings together so maybe it's seated at a strange angle or off-axis.

If anyone has any ideas on what I've done wrong, I'd appreciate a little help. Don't love the idea of draining yet more blue coolant out, redoing it and making the same mistake yet another time.... so trying to educate myself a bit better this time around.

Thanks!

Following up on this topic of my seemingly nonstandard s38 thermostat, I'm attaching some pictures (the original is at bottom, and at right) and also noting that:
– my m5 was built in October '87, the next to last month they were built, maybe there's a different thermometer housing?
- you can see on the thermostat housing stamping that the part number ends in 237, not the 236 as realoem and the etk suggest
- the original thermostat looks pretty close to the replacement I got from Pelican, but the diameter of the stopper is smaller, and the part number ends in 738, not the 737 as realoem and the etk suggest and what I ordered from Pelican
- I haven't been able to find these parts with these part numbers

Any advice on fitting a proper 'stat is much appreciated.

Was there any resolution here? I seem to be having the same issue. The number on my housing is 11531307736, not 11531307737. I have the correct Wahler thermostat from everything I can tell. When I opened up my housing there was no thermostat in it but there was a gasket with squared edges. The Wahler thermostat I have does not seem to fill the housing and the gasket does not seem to seat correctly?

I am left with the conclusion that either I have a different housing or the thermostat is supposed to sit in the housing in a loose manner. Any direction here?

In the end, it seems many suppliers are still having issues stocking the correct thermostat. The first replacement I had ordered (pictured above) from pelican parts. It's well documented that they were sending out the wrong part in the past, but I presumed bc the part I received looked more similar to the original stat that this wasn't the case for me. And surely they would have fixed this issue if it had happened so often before, right? But to rule it out I ordered a BMW part from Maximilian but once again a dud. I figured out however that it had been drop-shipped from Pelican even though ordered through Maximilian at BMW prices. After calling them up they sorted it out and sent another, finally the actual BMW part that is a perfect match for the original stat.

Moral of the story, beware pelican and maximilian and others selling OE stats. The only sure way to get the right part is to order from a BMW shop. I've had a great experience working with www.mybimmerparts.com, the eCommerce arm of Passport BMW dealership. They have great prices and a better process for making sure you're getting the right parts.

So you did have the correct housing just the incorrect thermostat?

This is the part I ordered http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009PV ... ge_o05_s00

Yes, housing was correct and the thermostat wrong. Disregard the numbers stamped on both the housing and the original thermostat. I've learned that hese don't necessarily correspond to the part number for whatever reason. And that's true for a lot of other parts that have come out of the car (control arms, struts, etc).

Yes after all these years it is still difficult to get the correct t stat. I got one from Napa and one from Oreilly and both were wrong, with the domed top, and would not seal correctly. I will now order one on line from Bavauto. I thought I was losing my mind until I ran across this post. Thanks again mye28

rustlers1911, can you confirm the one you ordered from Amazon is correct?

My temp gauge is always on the cool side. When I run the car hard it'll get up to the middle but will run a bit cool as soon I let off the gas. Also, not much heat in the cabin. I know the valve us clicking on that lets the coolant into the heating core so the coolant itself must be cool. I'm guessing the tstat is stuck open.

Sadly, I cannot confirm that the amazon thermostat is correct. I could never get it to seal well with the provided gasket. I fabbed a new gasket up to make it work and now the car is always at the halfway point on the gauge and I have heat in the cabin again. But I have changed the thermostat on many other cars and never had this issue so I have to assume the amazon one was not the right one. I am going to have my local BMW guru take a look at it when I take the M5 in to have the valves adjusted. I will report back then but that may be a month or two.

It would be great if someone could confirm a source for the right thermostat.

Good thread. I ordered a thermostat and got sent the wrong one I will have to check the 737 part and see if that is the correct one. The one I was sent appears to have a different number on the receipt after I got to looking at the packing slip. MAH-TX2180D which looks more like an m20, maybe m30 thermostat.

I ordered this and was sent the one from ECS tuning which does not fit: BMW Thermostat 80 deg. - Mahle Behr 11531307737 1 $14.29

Make sure to get the genuine part number with 737

Yes get the genuine bmw oe part. Fcp, ecs, pelican sell a mahle/behr that they say cross references, but that is actually not true. I bought one to do as replacement with my engine swap refresh but it did not fit. Sent it back (to pelican) but they have not corrected their website.

It’s probably an error in cross referencing on the oem’s side (behr) that is being perpetuated. Hopefully they will correct it.
