Speaking of Germany and beer, I'm less than impressed with the selection here. I'm probably not looking hard enough nor in the right places; the restaurants we've eaten at generally serve is a pilsner, a weissbier, and maybe a darker beer of some sort. I keep hearing that Germany has the best beer in the world, but... I think I'm not looking hard enough or in the right places.

Man, the first time I ever got really drunk was drinking Colt 45... I haven't had one ever since (more than 25 years ago), needless to say the hungover was brutal the following morning...davintosh wrote:Yup. Just start out with a couple of 12ozers like those ^^^, then you get these...oldskool wrote:^^ Wow, looks good! I wonder if they come in a 40oz?
It'll all taste the same.
nowadays I don't always drink beer, but when I do I drink Old Speckled Hen, Sierra Nevada and Stone IPAs & yes Dos Equis lol.
Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
I've been working out of New Orleans for a couple years now. Moved back to GA about a year ago from the lower garden district and have been sold on Nola Blonde. I pick up a case every two weeks and take it home, it's the staple on the farm. In my opinion it is great regular beer. Their Nola Brown and Hopitoulas IPA is winner too.
Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
I have been drinking Mic Ultra and Miller Light for so long, I really don't have a taste for real beer. I did enjoy Labatts Blue Light when I was in Canada. I can get regular Labatts at Publix, but not the light version and I don't care enough to hunt for it. Seems that my level of beer sophistication is related to temp. Cold beer is good.

The duvets in De. are odd to me, but nothing as compared to the toilets or the porn in gas stations. Odd folks, those Germans.davintosh wrote:Same; doo-vay. Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
Okay, time to revive this thread now that it is officially Autumn again.
Autumn means darker beer drinking, at least for me. Picked these up and a new local, small craft beer and beverage store. These are local (to LA and SoCal):
First up: MacLeod Ale Brewing Co.,Van Nuys, CA, "The King's Taxes: Scottish 60 Shilling"
A very smooth brown ale not unlike the ales I drank in Edinburgh back one summer in school. This one is lighter on the hops which make it go down real smooth (and quickly). I will be buying more of this. Soon.
Second up: Indie Brewing Co., Los Angeles, CA, "Port(er) of Los Angeles; So Cal Session Ale"
A nice medium bodied Session-styled Porter. As good as the Deschutes Porter I noted further back in this thread. I'll look into their other offerings.
Third up: Ballast Point Brewing Co., San Diego, CA, "Mocha Marlin Porter"
This is an intense, heavy on the coffee dark Porter. You have to be committed to it and pair it with some food or cheese that can handle it. The coffee is almost too overpowering in my opinion; I would rather go to the Kona Pipeline Coffee Porter instead as it is more forgiving.
As always, there is a 6 of Full Sail Amber in the 'fridge constantly; time for one now I do believe as I watch game 6 (Go Cleveland!)

Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
I'm a simpler beer drinker. i do enjoy a good porter occasionally but I often reach for a amber ale- Something with a crisp bite. I like a beer to make me stop gulping because it's hard but also have a pleasant smooth aftertaste. A lot of that can be solved with being cold enough.
I enjoy a fat tire too, I feel like that's still a amber ale. For domestic- my tastes are still kind of selective. I can drink most, but I seek out and enjoy Coors banquet. Those are really good beers.
That being said, I usually have a bourbon and coke as my drink of choice. Gin and tonic is another great choice, and I'll never turn down a quality white russian.

Re:
Andy it was yourself and your son that introduced me to the whole micro brew thing. We had some good times at that bar in Worchesta! I keep going back to Lagunitas Maximus when I'm looking for a six pack and have growlers of each size to fill locally when I'm feeling special. I will never forget some of the fun times we had at lime rock drinking that breakfast beer !!! I guess at the end of the day the beer taste good if your with good people!!a wrote:My favorite beer is the one I'm presently drinking. In truth, I have yet to find my favorite beer The search continues. My recent foray into Belgian beer was quite pleasant, Yeungling is a darn OK beer, Being the oldest brewery in the US and NFS in MA just adds to its character. About the only brews I havent been able to finish were both Sam Adams seasonals. October- Fest and double bock.

Yeah, that's a good one.Carol wrote:..... Paulaner oktoberfest (maerzen)
Ayinger is good too, I remember drinking that one when I was in Germany.
No love for the "Rothaus Pils", Davintosh? I loved that stuff!
I find some of the Sierra Nevada stuff to be from "pretty ok" to "not bad at all". Really like their "Nooner" German-style pilsen. The Blue Moon and Shock Top Belgian Weissbier-style stuff is pretty consistently ok, too.
Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
Can't say I've tried Rothaus Pils; my sinuses get all stuffed up when I drink pilsner, so I avoid it. There are a number of good local weisbiers that I enjoy, but all in all, I've been a little disappointed that there isn't more variety in beers here. I stumbled across a fantastic dopplebock last winter; came in a 2 liter bottle(!)
That's a standard .5L bottle next to the 2L bottle, for reference. At ~10% abv, it's not something you drink alone. Most beer tends to go flat if you don't drink it up within a short time of opening it, so we didn't take that chance.
More recently I found another dopplebock at a store in town, but once they ran out of what they had, that was it. My latest fave is Oettinger's Bockbier. The grocery markt in Lörrach carries it, and I just picked up a case yesterday. €12.50 with deposit for 20 bottles. That'll last me a while.

Don't know if I posted this already, but I don't care. If you're into a good Trappist ale, go with Orval. We visited the brewery/Abby last spring and I fell in love. Bevmo carries it.
Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
It's back! (and it was even on sale!)
4 liters of brewed & bottled goodness. Mmmmmm...

Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
I love most beers, particularly IPAs (though they tend to make me obnoxiously gassy), but my favorite "foofoo" beer would be Lindeman's Framboise Lambic mixed with Sam Smith's Chocolate Stout. Mmmmmmm
Re: OT -- What's Your Favorite Beer?
I keep coming back to Whatever Beer I'm Currently Drinking. What makes it so great is its available pretty much everywhere.

Not bad. Would buy again.cek wrote:Don't know if I posted this already, but I don't care. If you're into a good Trappist ale, go with Orval.

Yup, those Belgian monks know their stuff. But the Germans ain't bad either, even when adhering to the Reinheitsgebot. I just finished a bottle of this stuff, and am feeling properly happy.Karl Grau wrote:Not bad. Would buy again.cek wrote:Don't know if I posted this already, but I don't care. And speaking of dopplebocks, I shared a bottle of the Hacker-Pshorr Animator with my sons the other night; it was heavenly. I just can't understand why the dopplebocks aren't more widely available. For some reason they only seem to come out once in a blue moon. Crazy Deutschlanders.
