1987 535is - Bringing C.R. Krieger's old E28 Back to Life

Post by 85 535i »

Thought I'd throw a thread up in the eye candy section. Reminisce the old forum days.

Recently purchased a 1987 535is, Alpine/Cardinal red, from a good friend. After doing some digging it belonged to C.R. Krieger, who sold it to someone else on the forum. Then swapped hands again. Sat for roughly 8 years in a garage up in MI.

Nothing crazy to expect in this thread. Just a revival with basic maintenance and some mild tasteful mods in the future. Bought it to just cruise the summer days.

ODO has 264k and its still running strong!

The day I picked it up.

Did a little bit of cleaning. Cleaned out the trunk and placed all the carpeting and panels where they belonged. Mostly full toolkit, it was scattered across the trunk.

Car was overheating so a cooling system refresh was in order. Replaced the water pump, T-stat, hoses, radiator, fan clutch and some blue coolant. The temps are staying cool. Don't have any pictures of the new bits.

Replaced the cracked intake boots with some new OEM ones.

Interior got a new ZHP Shift knob and an M-tech wheel that I scooped up from a junkyard years ago. Wheel has definitely seen some better days but it'll do for now.

Did some LCAs because the ball joints had torn boots. Will eventually get a full refresh with all new arms, and suspension. Front struts are blown.

Replaced the head unit and installed some front speakers that were missing. Still trying to figure out speakers for the rear deck.

Car has some surface rust here and there that I plan on touching up.

Car has a misfire I'm trying to sort out as well.

That is it for now. I'll try to better at taking pictures of new bits as things progress. Glad to be back in another e28.

Thank you all

Great to see a car resurfacing that was once on here. Looking forward to seeing you bringing it back to life.

Thanks! It is going to be a slow revival but it'll get there.

Toyed with the misfire today. Seems like cylinder 3 is not firing. Given the unknown repair history of the car. I'll be ordering cap, rotor, and plug wires. Spark plugs were done by myself a couple weeks ago.

Good on you for bringing C.R.'s old car back!! I miss him around these parts and his typically caustic lawyer comments. [Coming from a fellow member of the bar. The one in the courthouse. Not the the one you are thinking of! :laugh: }

Is C.R. still around? He left here for Facebook or someplace, and that was the last I heard of him.

Yup, he's harassing a new generation of e28 owners.

Haven't seen anything new from C.R.

In other news, had a slight mishap while on the way to dinner the other night. Throttle cable decided to pop of the pedal. Was able to get it back into the slot and limp it home.

So the E28 is on the back burner until all the parts arrive.

I've got a track day coming up in a few weeks so it was time to give the track rat some loving. Replaced the alternator and she seems ready to go. A quick once over is all it needs now.

Cool, the Kelvinator is back.

CR's a character, but good guy. Last I heard of him he was on BFC with an E39 touring. But I haven't seen him there for quite a while now.
