E28 M535i Turbo

Post by SteVeeDub »

Hello Guys!

My Name is Steve and i come from Austria (small country south of Germany)

I wanted to show you my 85‘ E28 ///M535i

The story started in 2014, when i was out for a walk in my hometown. Suddenly saw a Old BMW nose hanging out of a Garage door. I started a little chat with the old man who ownded the car, and 2 Weeks later i bought it.

Thats what the car looked like when i bought in 2014:

Just with buying the Project started. The car was stripped, rust removed ant the car got a new paintjob in „Diamantschwarz metallic“

The Interieur was fitted with Recaro seats, got new cloth, a IRP Shortshifter, deep dish Steeringwheel and many more.
A H&R Coilover suspension and 8,5x17 + 9,5x17 BBS RS were mounted. So the saison 2016 could start

In 2017 i wanted to make a little change, so i bought a Set of BbS RF in 8,5x17 and 9,5x17. Painted the Centers gold and put a nice Livery on the car. A 4 Piston E38 Brembo Brake was installed too.

For 2018 i made a plan to turbocharge my e28
So i bought a complete E23 745i Engine. The engine was completely stripped and got fully rebuilt. It is equipped with forged pistons, stronger rods, borgwarner S369 Turbocharger and many more. Because of family, 2 kids and housebuilding this stage was finished in 2020.
Beside the engine, the E28 got other parts done too. So i modified and mounted a E30M3 Spoiler with carbon flap, removed one headlight for better air intake, Mounted a Set of rare BBS E50 Motorsportwheels and a lot of other little things.
Pictures below are random from 2018-2020.

Actually the car is Making 628HP Enginepower, or 604 HP at the Wheels.

And at the moment i am building the next step.
Big brake system.

Front: BMW E82 MPerformance Calipers and drilled 338mm disks
Rear: Cayman 987 Calipers with 300x20mm E34 M5 Disks

The BBS are sold and i ordered a set of ultralight racingwheels with sticky semislicks.

I hope you like my build ;)

Different styles and tastes is what makes the world go round, but obviously a lot of time and money went into this.

Wow, 604hp. Very nice car. I also have a diamondschwarz M535i, although mine still has a stock engine.

Neat!

What are the specs on the H&R Coilovers you put in? Actually part #s?

Nice build, but somehow the hp#s don't pencil
628 fwp and 604 rwhp; that's a 3.8% loss. Mmmmmmmdon'tthinkso.

A couple of formulas typically used in engine builds:

1. (fwhp +10) x .88 = rwhp. Using what' posted, (628+10) x .88. 638 x .88 = 561.44.
2. (fwhp x .84) = rwhp. Or, (rwhp/.84 = fwhp. 16% is a well-accepted loss factor for manual drivetrains

604/.84 = 719.04

That isn't to say the build isn't impressive; I'd just like to see (a) the dyno printouts and (b) the results from www.not2fast.com.'s turbo calculator "paper engine" model.

Hi! Sure, i show you the dynosheet. Measured on a Dynojet

Top curve Engine Power
Middle curve Torque
Bottom curve Wheel Power

These are H&R Coilovers you can buy in europe. You send your stock front struts to H&R Suspensions. And they send you the finished Coilovers back. H&R is one of 2 Companies, who build street legal Coilovers for Germany/Austria. All other DIY Solutions like BC Racing are not street legal here.

Thanks for supplying the graphs, but I still have some questions.
My doubts revolve around the delivered rwhp. This is because of my skepticism about Dynojet hp numbers. The Dynojet units rely heavily on wheel acceleration to provide a number. This tends to overstate results.
By way of comparison, most reputable engine building shops rely on either a pure engine dyno or on an eddy current setup.
The engine dyno setups eliminate the entire drivetrain-trans, driveshaft, rear end, wheels. Instead the flywheel is coupled to a pump which moves water. Relying on the quantities moved and the absence of intervening mechanicals, results here are about as accurate as one can obtain.
An eddy current dyno relies on the rear wheels to rotate a pair of large rollers. The rollers have armatures attached, and as they rotate thru a magnetic field, current is produced. This can be measured with a high level of precision.
The drawback to both engine dynos and eddy current setups is their size and complexity. For example, an eddy current setup will fill an entire vehicle bay and is a permanent in-the-ground installation. Hence the more common use of the Dynojet setups in most performance shops.

So while I will accept 628 fwhp from a properly-tweaked M30 (nice work, BTW), I have doubts about the minimal drivetrain power loss. 3.8% is just far too low.

Those are proper coil overs, the helper springs allow for a more compliant ride I’d imagine.
Any updates on your M535i?

Wow man very original and well-played. And I give you mad props for not building a ChevBimmer and keeping things largely German and period correct when applicable.
