FUBAR 528e, Gauging Condition of the M90

Post by LeiseyJr »

This is my 1st car and hopefully it'll be done when I'm 16. This is gonna be a slow build so follow along if you want to. Still trying to figure whole pic thing and getting used to the forum. So please bear with me. But Anyway, it's a 1987 528e 5spd with a LSD. :pimp: Can't really go over 40mph bc the whole suspension is gone. So I'm gonna rebuild that by the end of the summer hopefully. Any advice will be nice, and a B34 swap is planned for in the future. But I'm gonna start this out with a YouTube vid. I'll try to get more updates to you on Monday Night.

Looking good dude! Didn't realize you had a lift in your garage, that will definitely make things easier.

See you at the track tomorrow?

Still haven't replaced my battery but we did replace everything from the tank to the hard lines.

:?

Looking great so far! Except not
Eventually after school one day I dropped the tank.
Image
The only 14 year old that day in the world to cut their evap hoses to short that day. Unfortunately don't have pics of my genius. Once everything was buttoned up the car fired right up and did the fantastic surging. That was a fun experience tracking down the idle.
So my thought was the ICM because it had the exact symptoms for that. We put one in and decided to still be a bitch. A new one from Programa and some other used one. Got a ICV from my boss at work. None of that worked of course. Thought this might be part of the problem
Image
So went to the junkyard and my dad just cut a whole ICM harness out with the computer still attached. We thought that computer so we put it on our parts shelf and just let it sit. My boss then gave me another ICV with 9,000 miles from a 733i. No change with a new computer and a basically new ICV. :brickwall: So about to just put vise grips on the ICV hose. I grabbed the "broken" computer. Turned the key... And ... Voila! :D (just had to re-write this gonna read over my work next time)

More about that gnarly hood when I get more time. Enjoying the slow process of making a thread though.

So in the ad when they said nasty hood. Quite an understatement....
Image
Image
It was pitted with rust like it had been in a fire and then sat outside. When a decent used hood is probably accessible and under $100 and bolts right on... Or Bondo! It had like 1/4 inch of Bondo and it cracking in sections bc there was just to much. The hood was trash, but thank god I had Sherman.
Image
Image
It was the 1st car part I've ever payed for. Paints faded and not matching but it's a straight hood with rust. Which is all good since I'm gonna get the car repainted. You guys have any ideas on colors? I'm thinking Maroon. Has to match the tan interior.

Burgundrot is a wonderful color but if your gonna change paint, do it right and do the entire shell.

That's the color I meant by Maroon my dad had a 535i in that color a long time ago. It is a amazing color but I think I'll keep the Bronzit, it gives it that old car look but doesn't make it look like a total POS and hides a lot of imperfections too.

Small Update: Looks like we're gonna have to get a bonded title thx to the P/O. He bought it and never got it registered and so then we got it and it was last registered 5yrs ago. There's no known date of sale from the purchase and whole bunch of shit. It did have a clear Texas blue title and the carfax said it wasn't stolen or wrecked. So it should be pretty easy getting a bonded title.

Good News: I put a new air cleaner in it and it idles SO much better.

I have new spark plugs that I'm to lazy to put in. It has newish shitty Bosch Platinum +4 spark plugs. I got brand new correct plugs. Also, I'm in Hawaii!

Car runs great after I removed the shitty Bosch Platinum plugs. Compression was also done the results were:
1. 175-180
2.180-5
3.180-5
4.180
5.180-5
6.180-5
Pulled to 95 good for a eta. :haul:
The temp gauge is not working correctly even after a brand new board. Tach is now functional and almost all the electrics work minus the radio and the rear left window bc of P/O. Drivetrain is in great shape and it stops on a dime. Is it normal for the ABS unit to be very noise? The car rides great now I love the new setup. Not to stiff not to soft it's perfect and the car handles great. Recommend it to anyone who wants a suspension upgrade .Just have to fix the reverse lights, turn signals, temp gauge and get the aux fan working.

Image
Also got the A/C working. It was "converted" to R134a before. That's why it still had all R-12 fittings. Went to autozone got R-12 to 134a adapters and put a can of A/C Pro in and also put in another can of there A/C Pro 100 and now it blows cold. No problems yet keeps the car cool and it's holding pressure. I recommend A/C pro because it's easy to use and has worked it's just a great product.

Re: First Car 528e Build (Update:Replaced Tank 2/1)

Post by LeiseyJr »

So remember a year ago when we re-did the fuel supply. We thought $600 for a tank was a little pricey, so to save money we tried to save the tank, rust and all. After some cleaning we thought it would be good enough. So threw a fresh coat of paint on it and threw it in with all the other brand new fuel system components.

1 year later:
Heading to the dealer car is stumbling and dying as usual. Can't make get over 20mph so we crawl into a parking lot. As usual will rev in redline no problems and is idling great. Fuck! So I go out under the car and let all my rage on the fuel pump. Problem seems to get better as we limp to a gas station, its about 1/4 of a tank so we top it off. Problem is still present but continue to head to the dealer. Before we leave I crawl under the car again and beat the shit out of the fuel pump. Problem is gone, now I know what you're thinking then it just the main pump. The pump has less than 200 miles on it. Is something clogging the main pump?

Image
Yep thats rust coming from the low pressure line feeding straight into the pump. That'll do it. So to prove our theory we clean go the "old" fuel pump with 50 miles on it and spray PB blaster through it. What do you know more gold dust. So we just cleaned the pump out with PB blaster and hit on it. Until Today!

Old Gas Tank Inside:

When we ran the hose through and rinsed the tank.

So 1 year of aggravation and $300+ in unneeded parts and the price of a new tank, or we could've replaced the tank a year ago. *sigh*
At least I know all about Motronic 1.0 now, but that'll all be useless with the B34. Stay Tuned for the B34 swap! :D
Thanks for Reading!
