OK, one more time...'72 '02tii refresh - 5/12 update

I thought I was done with project cars? However, not the case, as purely by accident, I happened on to this one ... it must be fate?! I'm looking forward to what should be a somewhat easy "restoration" (I hope), that will give me another chance at 2002 ownership

She's a '72 '02tii that needs a good mechanical sorting, some minor (I'm hoping) rust and ding repair, and then a total respray. The car was thoroughly restored in the mid to late 80's, e.g., engine refresh, interior refresh, re-painted, new wheels, etc., and has changed hands at least 5 time since then, but only driven about 40K miles in the last 25 years, and only a couple thousand miles in the past 12 years (total 148K). Right now she a good 5-footer than drives pretty well.

This will be fun... meanwhile, saving my pennies for the body & paint work!

The way these cars are appreciating in price I hope you can find a body shop that will respray in Glasurit single stage paint.
I regret not doing exactly that about 16 years ago when our tii was painted Colorado, its original color. DuPont paint and it is not the right color. Didn't know then but I do now.

Since my last post in August, things slowed down on the refresh of the '72 2002tii due to "life in general" getting in the way However, I did made some progress, especially over the past couple months. In summary:

I had the car assessed at a local BMW independent shop and had numerous issues addressed while creating a list of others, less critical items, to address later. Those items that were completed included:
-replaced faulty e-flasher switch
-repaired left front brake caliper
-replaced both rear brake wheel cylinders
-replaced front and rear brake pads/shoes
-replaced all brake lines with coated lines and SS kit, plus fittings
-replaced idler arm bushings
-replaced spark plugs
-addressed hard starting issue
-repaired chewed wiring problems (mice)
-changed all fluids, e.g., oil, coolant, brakes. Also filters
-had spare tire wheel refurbished

Those items that will be addressed later include mostly fresh suspension and steering components, e.g., bushings, as well as springs and shocks/struts and sway bars.

I also got the car up on a lift to power wash the under-carriage, and then with a friend, scrapped any loose, previously applied, under-coating (from late 80's when the car was first re-painted, I'd guess?). Everything was solid, no issues what-so-ever... you can tell this car spend most of its life in the SW and SE, and not the North... very clean, except for some flaky under-coating and some minor surface rust. However, there had been repairs made to the spare tire well, which was covered in fiberglass and POR-15... we scraped that all off to reveal several holes due to rust in the spare tire well sheet metal.

We then wire brushed and wire wheeled the old under-coating and surface rust from the under-carriage components and used Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator to cover bare metal, etc. New under-coating will be applied when the car goes to the paint shop later this January.

Over the last month, in preparation for the January trip to the body and paint shop, we removed most of the car's trim. I have more work to do finishing up this task... need to figure out how to remove the trim pieces at the bottom of the side windows?? Also, we removed the rear seat and my wife cleaned-up that area, while I did the areas now exposed with all the trim removed, especially the inside the nose area.

Next stop: body & paint shop. Hope to pick it back up for re-assembly in the April time-frame.... will post progress then

More progress was made last week with paint stripping and any necessary body work on the hood, roof, and trunk lid of the '02tii. Removal of hood, trunk lid, doors, and glass is next. Still a long way to go.

Pretty exciting to watch your own car get painted.

I stopped in at the body & paint shop this week and they are making great progress on the paint stripping and body repair on the ’02tii. All the hidden past (51 years) comes out with this process as minor fender-benders are discovered, in addition to the small dings, dents, and rust areas that needed attention.

Most previous repairs were poorly executed and just filled in and not properly pulled or cut out first… this has all been remedied, as well as fresh metal fab work, where needed on the most serious rust spots (there weren’t that many). There is still some more stripping to do when the windows come out, but most of the heavy work is completed, with multiple primer and finishing process steps next before the color phase… in fact, the hood and trunk lid are now off the car and onto the next primer phase.

Meanwhile, I have thoroughly cleaned and conditioned, refinished, and/or polished all the exterior trim pieces, as well as interior panels, rear seats, and trunk panels. I also will be ordering new fasteners for the exterior trim.

I’ll provide more photos of the body and paint work on the car as it progresses thru Feb and March, and I look forward to re-assembly of all that is currently off the car maybe in April and addressing those future items referenced earlier, e.g., suspension, interior fan, sound system, etc.

Your welcome, and thanks for the interest.

First I cleaned them with a good heavy duty degreaser cleaner (The Pink Stuff) with a small soft scrub brush, then wiped them down with iso-propyl alcohol, and then two coats of SEM Warm Gray paint for vinyl. The side panel are not vinyl cover like the larger trunk pieces (they're just pressed board), so I had to be more frugal with the cleaner, and no brush, but light sanding. I also put two coats of Pecan colored Varathane on the backsides, and did some re-gluing of the vinyl that wrapped over the edged and was lifting where the staples had pulled out.

It was the least expense way to clean them up, rather than buy new panels of make some, and I plan to install a full trunk mat anyway... and, I may carpet over the side panels if they look to flimsy or tired

The shop finished up all needed bodywork this week, e.g., dents, dings, rust spots, etc., and got her all taped and papered up for a coat of polyester filler/primer. The front/rear windows are still to come out, but the next steps would include block sanding, and then a couple courses of primer with more block sanding for each.... great progress to-date!! So exciting to see the work that is being done to bring this classic back to it full glory.

Brief update: after block sanding the polly filler with 120,150, then 180 grit paper, then 3 coats of 2K urethane primer has been applied to hood and trunk... body is next for block sanding, then primer. Doors will then come off off so jams can be sanded. Heading toward the color phase!

I purchased replacement weather stripping for the front and rear windows, trunk lid, and both doors as the old pieces were not in good shape when removed, lots of adhesive in channels and on rubber from previous removals. Also purchased new zinc coated hardware for the hood, trunk lid, and doors when things go back together.

Multiple coats of urethane primer were applied to the body this week, which finishes up that phase. Doors will be removed so jams can be sanded... then color, maybe next week.

Doors are off and the sills, as well as the under-side edges of the hood and trunk lid have been sanded, self-etch primered then a two-part SEM seam sealer. Finally, a coat of color to see the match to the original Malaga from door jam area... excellent match!

Four coat of color, and three of clear, on the large panels... a lot of POP in that Malaga!! It was a color match to door frame areas. The paint was MIPA. Very pleased with the results so far, excited to see this progress

The paint shop finished up the body today with 4 coats of color and 3 coats of clear.... it looks great!! I love the picture of my friend the painter took of his reflection in the rear quarter panel... awesome! He says, it just needs a full buffing and then on to the next phase of installing the large panels, e.g., trunk lid, hood, doors. The undercoating then follows, as well as the wheel wells.

Getting closer to being done... I was hoping we could find a headliner guy that could go to the paint shop to replace that before the glass goes back in, but no luck so far I don't think that can be done with the glass in, as I know a good shop near where I live, but would hate to have to remove all the glass again??

Overall, the 3 months of body and paintwork has been terrific and it's almost Spring, so here's hoping I'll be putting all the external trim back on the car before the end of May... which was the optimistic goal!
