head gasket and ARP stud question

Post by 5150ct »

If i do an E to I conversion on my 84 528e, i was told compression would be somewhere around 8:1. Since this is already low should i use a stock head gasket or go to a MLS gasket and will the MLS lower compression further or is it same thickness as stock? Are ARP studs the same for both heads or do i need to order specific head studs for the E30 head im using or the E28 block, or some that are specific to this combo?

MLS =multi layer (something), you can drill the 2 rivets and remove layers to reduce thickness. I'm not sure on the studs.

Depends on you target boost level. Low boost setups with conservative timing can get away with stock parts...

I had to do head gasket anyway and figured so i wouldnt be working twice it would be best to just do it once and get it over with. I was thinking 14psi max.

I just got my 635csi turbo done. I took it to the dyno and it ripped a 400whp pass on 20psi with a completely stock engine. The engine came from a 88 735il pulled from the junkyard. Turns out my wastegate wasn't working for the last 2 months haha

Get with Todd @TCD, he'll get you the MLS you need. Great to work with.

Multi Layer Steel headgaskets are available in many thicknesses you have to decide what you want. I had a good experience with www.cometic.com when i needed a headgasket for a volvo engine that had been bored out beyond any stock sizes, however it was not a boosted engine so I cannot speak to that aspect of MLS reliability, longevity, etc.
