S38B36 service

Post by bavblue »

Hello,

I recently purchase S38B36 in E34 body M5. I noticed the luck of info on repair and maintenance , did Bentley ever published service manual for M5 either for E28 or E34. Any good source of technical and service info online or book. Thank you

Just our of curiosity, what is purpose of air pump on these engines, can it be deleted and still be able pass smog in California?

Air pump is necessary for Ca. smog.
Interesting pump on the B36 has a clutch like a A/C compressor to turn it on and off as it is used on cold start mostly to get catalytic converter to light off faster.
With the clutch the pump is then just freewheeling to have a small parasitic load on the engine.
The next design of a BMW air pump was a electric motor driving the pump.

I found this to be a great resource for valve adjustment, throttle sync, as well as some other good info. Some of the other regularly quoted resources have disappeared.

This is a good valve adjustment site also albeit in french.

M5Board has some good information too.
