Upholstery shop
I am restoring my 1988 m5. I am having difficulty finding an upholstery shop willing to take on the project. I am looking for a good upholstery shop.
Re: Upholstery shop
Search is your friend... In socal we use Jim's upholstery in San Diego.
IIRC, there is a preferred shop near your area...

Oh... please enlighten... I've only heard good things... :-)
Re: Upholstery shop
You probably should buy a kit from GAHH and have a shop install it. A competent shop should be able to do this with satisfying results.
Re: Upholstery shop
I have seen older work done by Jim's that looked really good; but in the last 5 years, with the exception of one or two jobs, the work has really gone down hill. Ill fitted panels, crooked stitching, and wavy piping. I now a few members here that would not use Jim's after their experience with them. There are better options in Southern California.trkshoe wrote:OcCoupe wrote:He's looking for a "good upholstery shop".trkshoe wrote:In socal we use Jim's upholstery in San Diego.

Re: Upholstery shop
Regarding better options?
Westminster Upholstery in Anaheim (714) 632-5050. Pete does excellent work and is reasonably priced. He did the seats in my 535i
Correct gauge thread, correct needle spacing, properly tied back.
Costa Mesa Upholstery (949) 645-6888 Oggie also does nice work including some really nice restoration work.
Juan Ortiz. He is also located in Costa Mesa and undoubtedly the best of all 3.
I am a picky SOB but if you're going to do it you might as well do it right.

Looks like I'll be sending my interior over to the west coast. Great quality of work.

Re: Upholstery shop
Hey there. Also in KCMO. In North Kansas City, there's a shop on Swift. He's who I plan on getting my seats done by. Quoted a very reasonable price, was very interested in finding the perfect red/black colour combo, and was confident in being able to do do things like doors, back seat, and roof upholstery in vinyl. He did not do dashboards, and I didn't ask about carpet. Showed me some of the other projects he was working on, and they all looked very nice.
I forget the exact name, but it's NKC something, and it's on Swift, near Luna Coffee.
I've never seen another E28 in KC, though. Started to think I was alone.

Re: Upholstery shop
Thank you everyone for the help. I am new to all of the online messaging boards, so not very fluent on how all this works. @ Owndapwn North Kansas City Auto Trim was the first shop I visited and they are about a year out, but still considering keeping the job local. I will definitely reach out to the West Coast shops to see who is interested in taking on my project.

Anyone have the contact info for Juan Ortiz in Costa Mesa?
Re: Upholstery shop
I just sent you a PM. Juan does great work. I know he's pretty booked up right now; but I will let him know that you are going to call him.Freddy1340 wrote:Anyone have the contact info for Juan Ortiz in Costa Mesa?

Will you also ask Juan to move to Seattle while you're at it?OcCoupe wrote:I just sent you a PM. Juan does great work. I know he's pretty booked up right now; but I will let him know that you are going to call him.Freddy1340 wrote:Anyone have the contact info for Juan Ortiz in Costa Mesa?
Re: Upholstery shop
I've known Juan for the past 15 years, prior to his current location. I've seen him do all kinds of cars, old English RR iron in white leather, Triumphs, American stuff, and lots of old BMWs. I plan on taking my car to him soon and certain he'll do a proper job. In fact, he has one of my old double needle sewing machines that I setup to perfectly sew the side-by-side stitch on the e24/e28 seats. So ya.., I tip my hat to Juan... The only problem is scheduling, he's very busy.
Re: Upholstery shop
I won a ebay auction for a eagle 66 oil can last night. Yippee! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Brass-E ... SwNuxXaS15
I sure hope it works well.

Re: Upholstery shop
Why are there NO "good upholstery shops" on the East Coast (NY area)? My E28 - M5 seats are in desperate need of help.
I also need a "good body shop" LOL

Thank you to everyone for all the help. I have spoken with Juan and he is working on an estimate for my project. On the East coast, I was told to contact EuroInteriors. They are located in Bedford Hills NY. Thank again.
