I believe this question is related, but what about a thermostat that works? The Mahle ending in 737 is incorrect.

Hi, what’s your experience with the 737, does it not fit or wrong temp setting? I would quote the part I have but it’s at the machine shop. I may be able to grab it in a few days.

The "new design in silver" thermostat ending in 737 is the wrong part for our M5's, yet Mahle keep selling it.

Yep, Mahle and a lot of other supliers have fucked up their lists and will deliver m21 thermostats.

m30 thermostats will fit mechanicly, but i still don´t know why bmw used a different partsnumber for the m88 thermostat

maybe somebody has an original m88 thermostat to compare with a m30 thermostat

Yes, it seems that all vendors are sending the wrong thermostats for our M5's. Even if the numbers are correct, the wrong thermostat is sent. Can anyone clarify this?

thanks,
Jeff

Many thanks to Neil...and I'd agree, with no reservations, that he is a stand up guy. These housing reproductions are just like the OEM ones. Top notch! :thanks:

So if the Behr/Mahle t-stat, p/n #11-53-1-307-737 is incorrect, won't fit or whatever, what p/n will?
realoem shows two different parts for the M30, #11-53-1-710-953 and #11-53-1-466-174. Both are 80*C units.
Does anyone know if either of these can be substituted for the -737 item?
If not, and assuming that the current listings by various parts houses are incorrect, does anyone have a number for a t-stat that is correct for the S38 motor? :dunno:

I ended up buying a NOS thermostat off eBay but would love to see this resolved by the manufacturer.

Wahler 4231.80

Bought this one and it fits correctly in my M5. Also, this is Tim who just emailed you to get in on that list. Ordered the wrong o-ring part number given on this website (http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e24/engine ... ostat.html) and cracked my housing cover during installation... :?

I would like to agree here that from what I can see the oem listed part no. 11 53 1 307 737 Is the correct one, there may be a case that mahle have a manufacturers part no ending 737 which is leading to confusion and mistakenly sending out the wrong unit.
I looked at my complete nos unit, the thermostat fits the housing perfectly but 737 are the only numbers scribed into it. Maybe the dealer for this would be the best option so as to avoid another case of this.

I hope this helps.

These guys are lame. While they show the Wahler t-stat in their website, their website is non-functional. It will not accept any method of payment. Instead, it says "contact us." When you try this you'll find their mailbox is perpetually full. You gotta wonder how serious they are about doing business.
I mean open 10-4 weekdays isn't exactly customer friendly in this covid-ridden environment.

Suggestions welcomed.

Received the reproduction housing from neilg a month ago but didn't get around to installing until this past weekend. Fitment is 100% perfect...all hoses installed correctly without excessive looseness or tightness...just like stock. No issues with the thread for the coolant bypass either. Thermostat fits nicely inside the counterbore and does not have any excessive movement.

One last thing: triple check that the o-rings you bought are the correct ones! Too many incorrect part numbers and had to reuse my old thermostat o-ring, still have to get around to ordering the correct one...
