Custom S38 For Sale

Post by Philo »

This is a built S38 stroker engine that started with an Stock 88M6 3.5 liter S38 that had 26k miles on the clock. The M6 was based in Palmdale California and suffered a car fire in 1992. The engine was purchased from a salvage yard in 2004. Over a period of several years the engine was massaged and loved to its present state. From approximately 2008 to 2013 the engine was rebuilt slowly taking all the time needed to ensure quality work and not to miss any steps. The plan was to use the engine in a daily driver E28 M5, but in 2014 decided to do the S54 swap into the M5 and hence decided to sell the S38 stroker.

The S38s engine configuration is 86mm stroke X 95mm bore resulting in just under 3.7 liters. The compression is 11.0 to 1 achieved by Metric Mechanic custom flat top forged pistons. Pistons are sealed by Sealed Power standard moly coated rings. Bench tested compression is 220-230 psi, with #6 cylinder showing 200 psi. Paul Burke, who assisted in the engine setup states "no problem , and will work itself out at break-in." The bores were cut and honed with attached torque plate leaving a perfect beak-in cross hatch. Each piston was numbered and the bores honed to match each corresponding piston. The entire lower end has been balanced professionally, the connecting rods were weighed and adjusted so that the weight of the small-end matched and big ends matched, resulting in the total weight of each con-rod matching each other. The crankshaft from a Euro E34 M5 was machine balanced, counter weight adjusted, and journals micro polished.

The cam assembly was completely replaced with new cam gears, chain, guides, and S52 tensioner. The intake cam is a custom Metric Mechanic high lift rally cam, the exhaust cam is a stock E34 M5 cam. The bolt holes on both cam gears were hand slotted, location pins removed, to allow for custom cam timing adjustment. Cam overlap/timing was set custom by Paul Burke.

This engine is designed to run a dedicated programmable engine management system in full sequential. The 60-2 toothed crank hub is from a 1992 e34 5 series. The exhaust cam timing magnetic rotor and hall sensor is from the E34 M5 as well. A Vipec V88 engine management system is available for a separate cost. There is also a custom made wiring harness that was built to spec to run the V88 on a E28M5/S54 conversion and can be converted relatively easily to run the custom S38. Also sold at separate cost.

The intake system is the E34 M5 airbox/plenum and throttle bodies. The airbox was cleaned, walnut shell blasted, washed multiple times, powder coated with black crinkle, and reassembled. The E34M5 throttles where also dismantled, ceramic coated light silver, some of the metal parts nickel plated, plastic shims replaced new, vacuum tube o-rings replaced, throttle bar bearings replaced new, and assembly hardware replaced new.

The engine was completely disassembled, the block was magnaflux tested and bored to spec (95mm) to match the Wiseco custom pistons. The pistons were purchased from Jim Rowe at Metric Mechanic and came modified to include additional oiling holes and relief slots in the skirts. Standard for Metric Mechanic pistons. Prior to installation of the pistons they were blue printed, weight matched and checked for proper wrist pin/deck height to ensure even compression. After installation into the block the piston deck height was verified once again.

The entire rotating assembly was blue printed and balanced prior to assembly into the block. The crank, a 1993 E34 M5 86mm, was balanced with the Metric Mechanic lightened flywheel attached. The stock S38 connecting rods were weight matched as well. Main and rod bearings are Glyco. Bearing tolerances are stock for the S38. The oil pump was also purchased from Metric Mechanic and is their reworked high pressure pump.

The S38 head was sent out and rebuilt by Rick Kemph of San Pedro, CA, who is well known for head work on S14s, S38s and everything else that is performance based, even aircraft engines. Rick rebuilt the head using stock valves, de-shrouded the combustion chamber along the outer combustion area of the valves, and trimmed the valve stems for even shim clearance after assembly. Rick has all the tools to perform all the critical checks and measurements on the bench while test fitting to the cam tray.

The head was ported, exhaust side only, both sides where then port matched to intake TBs and Euro M88 headers. The decision to only port the exhaust side was made by Rick. His experience with S14s and S38s proved that due to valve timing overlap S38s needed help on the exhaust side and would provide nice HP gains. The stock intake ports with larger pistons would then provide a higher fill velocity. Since the original build the Euro headers were modified to add 02 sensor bungs on each pipe so that high RPM port tuning can be performed. Note, this can only be accomplished with an engine management system that runs full sequential tuning and with features for individual cylinder fuel trims. The Vipec V88 can do this.

Bumped this as I decided to sell the engine once again now that the S54 is humming away in my engine bay. I thought that maybe I'd stick this bad boy in an e30 or 260Z but decided not to get into another swap project. The S54 was too much trouble and very costly. It's all the little shit that killed my enthusiasm for swaps. Now thinking about the S55 M2 coming out later this year :)

Also, the 6sp Euro trans is gone. Selling just the engine and all the bits. I even have brand new Vipec V88 and harness that I'm willing to sell as well.

Let me know if anyone wants to chat about the S38. PM me or call - 310-766-1923

Odd, I don't remember the original post. Whatever, wow. I notice no price is listed, but I don't need to know, it's too rich for my budget, which is not a criticism, just an observation. Curious though, why did you start with a (relatively) basic M6 engine and not start with one of the unicorn S38B38 engines? GLWS!

Would this engine be SMOGable in California? It's probably irrelevant because as Mike alluded to, the lack of a price in your post = insanely expensive? ;)

CEK !! Dude, LOL.., I put links in the original post for a reason !!! But alas, we now have an image heavy mega-scroll-post that will no doubt get me banned from the group :)

Hi Mike, I posted this engine years ago and at the time was selling the engine and 6sp trans as a package. We'll, the trans is gone and I'm not up for another swap car project right now so decided to list the engine once again. Would love to see this engine go into a really cool e28 project, or maybe an e30. Te engine is so iconic. So back in the day when I found this engine my plan was to use a stock replacement S38 that I could put in my car when the original died. Well, it never died and I the M6 engine sat in my garage for years so I decided to rebuild it to a custom spec, and umm, in the process kinda went nuts. At least that's what the parts guys at the BMW dealering thought. I was on a first name basis with them for years. Had I found a B36 or B38 in the junk yard I would have done the same thing, build a custom engine. Price is left to private discussions. I prefer it that way.

PMs sent to those interested, thanks for looking.

Karl, shure it will pass, wink, wink... My S54 M5 passed, wink...

Eye candy? More like engine porn. Oh, we don't have a subforum for that yet. This might justify it.

Phil. No apologies on not listing a price, I fully understand. I admit, I am curious, as much to see how close or far off my guess might be because aside from not having a viable destination it's out of my price range. I'm thinking, well, it kind of starts here, then he does that, and then this, then custom machine work, and... Any SWAG on what the HP numbers might be?

I've got a couple guys looking at the engine at the moment.

A couple things to consider with this engine for those still looking/thinking/dreaming. The engine is highly customized and has never been fired so the person who buys the engine needs to know their S38 shit or work with someone that does. You'll need to reconfirm all the basics, crank timing, cam timing, valve/cam clearance, torque on mains and rods, cam gears, you know, all the critical stuff. You'll need to run a programmable engine management system, adapt over the engine harness I have or build a new one. Setup the coil on plug arrangement, wire in an exhaust cam and crank sensors, program in the dual runner changeover for the E34 plenum, setup MAP sensor, IAT, throttle angle, etc.. Lastly, the compression is 11-1 aprox and the last time I did a compression test it was in the 230ish number with the cam timing set to a Paul Burke setting (cam gears are adjustable, cam location pins ground down), so careful consideration needs to be applied with the startup map as in fuel and timing.

In short, great engine for a race prep project or someone that has a really cool swap project in mind. I wish I had an E9 to put this thing into :)

Call or PM me with any questions.

Phil.

Ever consider selling it on Bring a Trailer to the trigger happy nostalgia driven bidders? Have seen some odds and ends (parts/engines/wheels/drivers manuals) aside from whole cars sold there for lots o money.
