Left/right sunroof guides

Post by akluminus »

Hi all. In the process of putting my e24 back together after paint, I found out that both left and right plastic sunroof guides were shot. After almost 40 years, the plastic had shrunk enough to break both ends around the metal nuts. These seem to be NLA, and, if I could find a set, who knows how long they would have lasted.

So, I had a new set made out of Delrin with stainless inserts. These are BMW # 54121843429 (left) and 54121843430 (right).

Anyone else interested? They should fit a large number of cars:

3' E21   (03/1976 — 12/1982)
5' E12   (02/1972 — 07/1981)
5' E28   (09/1980 — 12/1987)
6' E24   (06/1976 — 04/1989)
7' E23   (10/1976 — 11/1989)

I'm gauging interest to see if it would be worth while to have a larger batch made.

No, that wouldn't hold up over time. These are CNC machined Delron/Acetal.

Definitely had some interest, but not enough to make a large batch of them. Which is no problem, I can still do single sets as needed, but I think they're going to be $175 a set.

I'll leave this post up for anyone searching in the future, feel free to reply to this thread or message me directly!

Those look terrific!!!

My brother-in-law has been trying to make a couple replacements using a busted right side one with his 3D printer. Getting close but, you’re probably right it’s not going to work out.

Can’t find them anywhere.

I’m very interested in getting a set of those!!!

I can do single run sets, but they will be $175 per set. If that works, send me a PM for payment info.

Thanks!

Hi Aaron,

I’d be very interested in getting a pair of these made. are you still marking them? Where are you based, will you post internationally to Australia?

Thanks!

I am making them. There hasn't been enough interest to get a larger batch going, but they can still be done in one-offs. The downside of course is volume pricing. I need to update the posts above so there is no confusion, but they can be done as a set for $175 ea, and international shipping is fine (usually about $20-$30 USD.

Will these E28 M5? I like to install these in conjunction with replacing the sunroof cables.

I believe so, but haven't verified personally. I looked the part up on realoem, and they seem to be the same for e21/e12/e28/e24/e23.

I asked because M5 and 535i are not on the Realoem list of vehicles having these parts.

New to this. What happens when these plastic guides get shot? Does the sunroof just not work at all?

Not yet. It does appear the parts you listed are only used on vehicles with production date up to 12/83.

Huge thanks to Akluminus!!! You hooked me up with a set of glides that works great!

The quality is wonderful. The nuts are set in there perfectly and you can use the same hardware as the original.

I still have some adjusting to do to get the sunroof flush but, the glides are perfect.

Much appreciated and highly recommended. Way to go Limitedslip Engineering great quality.

Go after them boys. I don’t know where else you can get new glides.

Ended up with two broken guides when I removed the sunroof for rust correction / prevention. I'd totally be interested in a pair of these as well. Not sure how to PM either, but happy to keep searching until you see this and hopefully PM me!
