Current Tire options for 15” wheels

Post by Tom4444 »

Getting my tires replaced on a new to me e28 535i (have owned it for about a year).

Currently sitting on 215/60/15 Yokohama Avid touring S.

I could replace these with another set or go 205/60/15 or change both tire size and brand.

Any tire size opinions or tire brand options you guys recommend? Very limited options in this sizing and I don’t necessarily want to go up to 16” wheels.

Here are links to options:

Also look at Tire Rack.

I would not do a 205/60 -- they're a bit short. See this recent discussion: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=159748. The % differences will still be relevant, as the 14s and 390s used the same speedometer calibration.

Can’t do tire rack since tires are getting replaced under warranty.

Limited to the discount tire options.

Well, that wasn't the main point of my reply. The sizing was.

No, 205/60-15 is nearly the exact size diameter. My math says less than half a percent difference. OE sizes were 195/70-14, not 205. Not that 215/60-15 will make a big difference either.

The car does have a heavy steering feel, which I assume is a combination of the wider tires (215) + inherently heavy e28 steering. I don’t have much of a reference point but steering system is working as designed when it was inspected.

Would jumping down to 205 make a substantial difference?

Also, I appreciate the response Shawn.

These are the current options for 215/60/15 on Discount Tire Direct:

BFGoodrich - Radial T/A
General Altimax RT43
General Altimax RT 45
Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus
Milestar Streetsteel
Barum Brillantis 2
Ohtsu FP7000
Pirelli P6000
Falken Sincera SN250 A/S
Firestone Champion Fuel Fighter
Hankook Kinergy PT H737
Kumho Solus TA11
Yokohama Avid Touring S
Uniroyal Tiger Paw Touring A/s

Tire rack options options for 215/60/15

Vredestein Sprint classic - Great reviews
Laufenn G Fit AS
Riken Raptor HR
Toyo Extensa AS 2

Not sure if there is a go to tire that people are using in the above tire size, but I have no idea what some of these brands are and if they are any good. I've only had experience with the Yokohama Avid Touring S, which IMO is an OK tire. The Vredestein Sprint classics are only on tire rack but seem to have excellent reviews.

You've provided a laundry list, and it's not likely anyone has experience with most of those, or wants to do a rundown on each, so you probably should read the written customer reviews. That being said, based on direct personal experience of those you have listed...

DO NOT GET:
BFGoodrich - Radial T/A

I WOULD SUGGEST:
General Altimax RT43 if you can get it in the "H" version. The non-H might be OK, but I haven't used those.

It looks as if you missed at least a few on Tire Rack, such as the General Altimax RT 45, as it shows 215/60 as an available size.

Pretty sure I wasn’t asking for a rundown on each.

I was asking if there’s a go to tire for a 15” wheel out of the list, which was provided so someone w/ a recommendation wouldn’t have to scour through the options on each website.

Tire brands not included were redundant btwn Tire Rack & DTD (to minimize the “laundry list”) or had poor reviews.

Trying to make it easy, not more difficult.

Appreciate the suggestion to avoid the BF Goodrich.

Running the RT45s on the rear of my e28 in 215/60R-15 sizing. They're perfectly acceptable all season tires.

Dropping down to 205/60/15 instead of 215/60/15.

Looks like much better tire options.

anyone run the Yokohama Avid Ascend GT ?

Nokian has a “all weather” grand tourer, the WRG4. Seem to focus on snow/ice prowess, but a quality company from what I’ve heard.

No summer tire options unfortunately for a 15”.
