Ignition Problems

Post by EamonSayles »

Hi, I have a 1988 528e and I recently had a short happen to the positive/negative ignition coil wires that sit just above the water pump pulley. I have replaced the wires, pulse sensor, and coil with a known working one, I still get crank but no spark. I am only getting around 9.8v from terminals 15 and 1 with the key in the on position, and the coil is very hot to the touch. As I am new to electrical problems, I could also assume that my wiring job was done poorly and could be the problem. What else could be the problem here? Thanks!

(Side note if anyone has a spare engine harness and is willing to sell that also works.)

First, I'd check continuity for each individual wire going through that area.

Second, I'd look at whether the ECU was damaged by the short. If you can find someone who has a loaner and will be OK with you testing it, that'd be part of checking.
