Can I Remove Un-needed Wires for Motronic 1.3 Swap?

Post by Joey28 »

On the M30B35 side of the harness, can I remove all of the wires not connected to the E28's C101 connector and relays? I'd like to unpin them from the DME and remove them completely for neatness and simplicity's sake, but need to make sure there won't be any unintended consequences. I hope this isn't a dumb question. Thanks!

Sure, so long as you know what and why you're doing it.

OK, thanks. I assumed so. Did you retain the diagnostic connector?

You can chop that off, but be wary that you might need to keep a switch or something similar somewhere, to reset the cluster service indicator.

Thanks. I'm just going to retain it. Taking care to make sure I keep the wiring that's needed and getting rid of the extra wires from the E24 donor. Gonna run the CEL light too.

I haven't messed with the harness on my E28s. Mine was a general statement, so I have no answer for you on this.

By definition, an unneeded wire can always be removed :D

the trick is knowing for sure that it isn't needed. More than once I've removed a thing only to find out later what I needed it for.

I've got it running now, but I got a bad injector with the new set I bought. I'll just run it once the injector's fixed and then scan it after a few warmup cycles. As long as no error codes come up with what I have connected so far, then I guess I can chase down the unconnected wires in the harness and remove them before wrapping it up. Fired right up though!
