17" wheel setup for 1984 BMW E28, 533i

Post by LookoutDC »

I have a 84 e28 533i that is not my daily. I'm not looking to track the car or drive on winding roads. Just want something that I can hope in and drive around town and enjoy with my son. The car currently has 16's one them but I would like 17's, ascetically looks nicer in my opinion.

I've looked at BBS's and currently not looking to mortgage my house or give a kidney away. The prices of BBS's is a little rich for my blood, $2.5K+ and the ones I liked were $3.5K on ebay.

So I'm looking at aftermarket rims that are basket weave style. From what I have found online the following setup would work for my 533i,

17x8 or 17x8.5, 5x120, et20, 72.5 mm hub with tire sizes of either 225/35/17 or 235/35/17. No looking to stagger, want a square set-up and want a plug and play option. Not looking to roll fenders or upgrade suspension. The suspension is stock but not original, it has been replaced.

After researching online I've found 2 contenders but they are not an exact fit and if I mount them, I can't return the wheels. So my questions are the following.

Contender 1) https://www.wheeloutletnj.com/products/ ... 5323303165
These wheels have the following specs; 17x8.5, 5x120, et35, 73.1mm
Question: Will these wheels fit with an offset of 35mm. I know I can use a 15mm spacer however will this cause any issues regarding fit and driving?

Contender 2) https://jncwheels.com/products/jnc004-p ... 8510227142
These wheels have the following specs; 17x8.5, 5x120, et15, 73.1mm
Question: Would I just need a 5mm spacer and hub rings and the rest be plug and play?

My preference is for the WheelOutLetNj.com ones, since I like their BBS look and color.

Thank in advance for all your help, much appreciated.

don't buy reps. just go on marketplace/cl and look for 17" style 5s, they look like rs and are oem bmw/bbs wheels so they will be actually good unlike jnc. they're mostly 17x8 and a ton of people run them.

I feel you on rep's but I've looked on CL, from NYC to DC and found nothing. Not on FB so can't speak about marketplace.

So that's why I'm going this route.

Thanks,

This is not a rhetorical question:

Has anyone found any 8" x 17" et20 to be completely "plug-and-play" on an E28 (much less an 8.5" x 17), without any modification?

Just curious.
{FWIW, I run 7x16 et20 Style 29 on my 535i and 535is. I also have several sets of 8x17 et20 Style 42, but I use them on my E39. I like that look better than Style 5, but maybe that's just me.}

Me as well, I think Style 42's ONLY look good on an E39 Sport.

Style 5s were my favorite until I saw style 42. They are now. They were a significant selling point when I bought my E36, it has 42s. E36 high offset one piece 42s, but still 42s. A very good looking wheel IMO.

Yes - style 19s, 17 x 8" ET20, 225/45/R17 all round. No rubbing, no hub rings.

You are not using hub-centric rings with E39 wheels on an E28?

Shopping pos rep wheels myself.... PO what did you end up with?

It looks like 17x9.5 et32 just might fit the rears...
I know 17x9 et20 style 32s fit no problem.

Hi. I just got a set of Style 42s, 17x8 et 20. I haven't bought tires yet but I test fitted one on the front and the wheel is VERY close to the strut. Do I need to run spacers (what size?), and what would be a good tire size recommendation for a more or less, cruiser car?

I'm running Style 20s. 17x8 ET20 square fits, however, I have 20mm spacers on all corners. First perfectly for me. You might wanna go with 15mm spacers if you have wider tires. I'm pretty low and on 205/40R17.
