Greetings. I have a 1987 528e with a modified 2.7 M20.
My previous head gasket is failing on the exhaust side only and the head will need to be pulled to fix the leak. While I’m in there I have considered replacing the following:
- upgrade to HD rocker arms (ie motorsport)
- 272 cam (ie motorsport)
My question is should I look at new valve springs or any other possible maintenance items while I’m in there? Do I need an adjustable cam gear?
Current setup is typical seta m20b27 with 885 head and other parts to complete the swap. (Intake, DME, stock injectors, etc.)
Car is street use only, not looking for impeccable dyno numbers, but I’d like to keep her running well and get a few ponies out of it too.

Higher lift cams really need springs at there best so new springs would help as would valve plates, valve collets....
Before you know it you have replaced every moving part in the cylinder head.
