1987 bmw528e

Post by sgolden447 »

My bmw528e will start and run all day, but if I drive it it will cut off after about 30 minutes and will not start until the next day. Does anyone have a clue what this could be.

First, don't post tech subjects like this in "General Conversation." Second, make the title descriptive of the issue, not "1987 bmw528e."

It sounds as if you have a clogged fuel filter. When was the last time you changed it?

Also sounds like an electronics issue, where the part heats up and internal pieces separate. When it cools down, the connection resumes. Likely ECU or speed sensor failing.

So it starts. Then if you leave it idling in the driveway it will continue to sit there at an idle for hours? But, if you start it and try to drive anywhere it stops mid-drive and leaves you stranded on the roadside? When you go back to retrieve it the next day it starts right up. That’s a puzzler. What does the temperature gauge show after a few hours idling versus the indicated temperature when you’re driving and it quits running?
