gearbox replacement for sport seats

Post by torin.kw »

My electric sport seat gearbox is broken, (motor actuator lines snapped) and I was wondering how plausible it is to repair, or if i should get a new seat entirely.

I have the sport seats in my '88 535is and I think they are fantastic. I have had to replace a couple of the control motors - purchased them from MyE28 members. They are relatively easy to replace. I grew up in the auto upholstery business and am always surprised at how complex but simple the old bimmer seats are. The seats are a bit tricky at first - there is a fitting on the seat rails that if you push it out the whole seat will lift and tilt backwards without having to take the seat out of the car. Most older American cars you have to push the seat all the way forward loosen and remove the rear bolts then push it all the way back and remove the front bolts - then remove the seat out of the car to access the motor. You'll have to then figure out which motor is bad and hope that a fellow member has one for sale.
