Sorry folks for leaving you all hanging.
I ended up getting a replacement head from a 1983 633i - it had only 50,000 miles on it.
I had to have all the work done for me. Wasn't cheap, but it was much better than a rebuild.
Costs up here are always more for everything: parts, labour, etc.
As said before there are fewer machine shops and the waiting time is in the months.
I had a number of mechanics turn me away because they had no time to do actual engine work.
I was considering selling her after fixing.
When I went to pick her up the shop owner was so enthusiastic about the car
he said he will buy it. He also said I was going to be very happy.
So, after all the worry and headache she is driving like a new car - the acceleration is effortless - so much more peppy and responsive.
Smoother auto shifting, smoother idle, smoother purr to the engine.
Now, of course you know how I feel about selling it.
Thanks to everyone who read my post and gave me great feedback. I don't visit this site as much as I used to.
So nice to get so much interest.
I let you know when I decide to sell!
