E28 Newbie

Post by LadyCosmos5 »

Hello everyone! :)
I’m new around here, less than a month ago I became the proud owner of my first E28.
He is a 1985 528e in Cosmos Blau, 5 speed, and couldn’t even be more happy! Hope to be able to share some images and also looking forward to meeting some of you and hear some stories and info on everyone’s E28! Have a great Saturday everyone!

Welcome to the group!

Yes, please post pictures, we want to see what you have. It's a slightly involved process, in that pics have to be hosted offsite, but easy enough when you get the hang of it. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=147488

Thank you all!
Still learning how to use this forum. Still need to learn how to upload photos

Haven’t taken any proper photos yet of the old man, but I am enjoying every minute of him. I came from owning a 92 E30 and it was a little different than the E28. It’s also my first manual car, so I am also enjoying that very much. He is my one of three BMWs in my fleet. He is also the only classic one!

Car is an unmolested,100% original 528e. One owner. Cosmos Blau with pacific blue leather interior. It has 108k original miles. Leather is in perfect condition due to PO protecting front seats with original bmw sheepskin covers. Original bmw radio as well as all tools, bottle cap wheels and US bumpers.

Looking forward to sharing more info and photos once I figure this out

Very nice! I have its cosmosblau/pacific blue lookalike parked in my garage. I bought mine new in 1985. It was around $26,000 in dollars of that era, equivalent to about $70,000 in today’s money.

It lives next to my wife’s compact Lexus convertible, which is longer, wider, and higher. It is hard to see the e28 as a mid-size sedan of its time, though it seemed to be much larger back in the ‘80’s. Now it is dwarfed by most everything on the road.

I believe the PO paid about the same for his on 07/1985. I actually parked him next to my 2011 F10 528i and the E28 looks so small, yet still a great size for the car itself. Comfortable and you don’t feel crammed inside of it. Might even start to daily it!

The Five-series gets bigger every generation but never really gains any interior room. Even my 1970 2000 sedan (5-series predecessor) was huge inside. In fact, I used 7-series floor mats in it which fit perfectly. There is really no more room in a current 5-series than my E28 or E34, both of which are smaller than my E39s which still don't offer any more interior room. And this is especially true in rear-seat legroom.

I tell many of my customers to set the driver seat where they want it in a 5-series, then do the same in the current 3-series and see which one offers more rear-seat room. Surprising little difference and in some cases the 3-series wins. Which may be signaling the ultimate demise of the 5-series for BMW. Don't think that's possible? Remember the 6-series?

Once you drive a manual it will be hard to go back! So much more engaging to drive.
I swapped my E30 from auto to manual and wired it like a factory 5-speed.
Even my sister is daily driving a manual subaru forester.

Great picture! It is very original.
Are you planning on keeping it stock, or modifying?

Original radio? The few e28s that I have come across during my 36 years in the e28 world typically have an “upgrade,” some done well, others not so well. Probably the worst I have seen was in an M5 whose current owner had received the M5 as payment for house painting, and who had no idea what he was driving and how it fit into the BMW world. He was in the process of turning it into a rice racer, complete with a coffee can exhaust and high rise aluminum double wing trunk spoiler.

Do you have any remaining tapes saved from the cassette tape era? I am pleased that your new to you e28 has been maintained in its original condition.

Totally and completely agree. It’s a whole other animal.

I plan on keeping him as stock as possible, given at how original and pristine he is. Probably will do wheels, not much else. At least I have fun modifying my other bmw
