So just how slow can an F15 fly?

Post by Mike W. »

Seems a Cessna entered the restricted airspace around where the Prez was getting away from things. Sounds like the guy was on the wrong radio frequency and didn't check the latest air news, so was presumably oblivious as he's probably done it a bunch of times, with out issue. F15s were scrambled, as they should have been, and "escorted" the 172 away. Now while I have looked and the answer of how slow they can fly is unclear, it's just the absurdity of F15s on a Cessna. Yes, I know, it's the post 9-11 world and everything has to be dealt with as a potential threat, and they surely could have blasted him out of the sky, or likely even gotten in front of him, hit the afterburners and roasted him out of the sky, but I've just got this mental image of a Cessna and F15s. :fool:

Where's Tim when we (I) need him? But it seems like we've had other pilots here too.

Just wondering... :dunno:

There was also an MH-65 expect it to be a Coast Guard chopper which probably was the main visual accompaniment for the Cessna which is 50 mph faster but a couple flybys by the F-15s would have made the 172 pilot follow orders from whichever craft was in charge and telling him what to do.

My brother is bothered by TFRs every time Joe goes home to DE. The TFR for the beach does not cover his house sohewasableto play with his drones this weekend.

That makes sense but wasn't mentioned in the news stories I saw. I've just got this mental image of a couple of F15s struggling to go slow enough to pace the Cessna.

Pretty low. I live a few miles away from Trump National in NJ. While he was president the air space was closed every other weekend when he would stay here over the summer. I have a couple videos of the jets escorting a tiny propeller plane out of the area. They were pretty low and going so slow that I wondered how they can stay in the air. Craziest sound I’ve ever heard too.

The Ospreys that flew in 3’s were a whole different thing. Those are the most amazing things I’ve seen in the air.

Landing speed is 130 knots. Cessna could hang out all day going slower than that.

I think anyone would get the point should they get buzzed by an F15. At that moment you would certainly realize you stepped in it pretty bad.

Hey guys

A Cessna would cruise at about 100kts ( or less depending on power setting ). While I dont know the exact number for the min safe speed of the F15, it’s possible to fly them at sub-100kt speeds with full flaps and high thrust setting. It would be aerodynamically below the wing being effective - but they have buttloads of thrust to deal with gravity.

To be sure, the Cessna could slow to about 40kts and still fly- and that would be largely impossible for the F15 for any length of time…it’d run out of fuel…lol

Listen to the high power setting it has on that slow pass in the video

Not to hi-jack this but I thought this was at the very least related. Besides, it's a barrel of laughs and a totally awesome display of flying skills shown by a pilot with a set of really big brass ones:
