So you think your gas prices are expensive?

On a bit of a getaway in Death Valley during the shoulder season where a really expensive hotel is only expensive, but we still have to buy gas. Yeah, everyone's hurting on prices but this is nuts. The first one is where I got it today, the second is where I'm staying. Yeah I know, location, location, location, but still. Looks like some profit taking to me as the extra expensive place is only ~30 miles away. Oh well, life goes on.

Fuel has been going up about $0.10/ga/week for the last 4 weeks here in Los Angeles; just when I thought we were making some progress with costs coming down, it turned on a dime.

My local Shell station had dropped below $6 ($5.899, 91 Premium) for the first time in several months; that was the last time I filled up 3 weeks ago (I don't drive much). I just filled up on Thursday and it was $6.199 which for the E39 meant the total was $108 for a full tank.

Those stations up and down CA395 through the Sierras are nuts as they gouge the tourists and RVer's heading the National Parks; looks like the eastern side of DV isn't any better.

We are heading out to Yosemite this week in the CR-V (which doesn't get much better mileage than the E39 oddly), so this is going to be...pricey.

I broke 100 bucks for a tank in the truck last night. $4.59 per gallon. Diesel at the "cheap" place is 5.99. I need a tank of that too.

Yow!! They should change a couple of letters in that sign to read Furnace Creek F**k!

Oh well, looks like the long summer road trips may be postponed again.

There's expensive and there's comically high, which I think the second shot is. I've heard about $100 fillups, haven't quite hit it yet, but did land on $96 a few days ago for 15+ gallons in I think it was Three Rivers. Which incidentally is a cool little town, for a tourist town. Death Valley Ranch, where I'm staying at the moment was supposed to be a fun indulgence, instead it brings to mind the old joke, "Not classy, just high priced" Oh well, such is life.

Meh. High fuel price is uncomfortable, but historically fuel been cheap in USA for a very long time. In many countries people been paying this kind of prices for years. Also in many countries income is fraction of USA. Basically a lot of people in the world have been paying $30+ per gallon. I hope that makes you feel better about the temporary fuel prices. ;)

nah, clearly the price is entirely the fault of the current POTUS, since obviously he determines the price of fuel everywhere on the planet. Just ask someone here and they will tell you who is to blame.

"Trickle down" is not real.

Filling up Burbie's 42 gallon tank
on a recent cross country to San Diego
brought new appreciation for NEX pricing.

barrel of oil goes up...price of gas goes up that day

barrel of oil goes down...price of gas comes down after the new barrel of oil reaches the gas station.

And the oil companies don't want to be taxed on windfall profits.

Jeez guys, don't get so serious about things. I just thought a shot of $8.73 for premium would be funny. It's significantly higher than I'd ever seen before here in the US. I don't care (for the purposes of this thread) why it is what it is, just what it is. And Furnace Creek in Death Valley is a very different place from almost anywhere.

Look at the bright side. when the price hits 10 bucks the pumps won't be able to show the price since they are limited to 9.9999. Maybe we could switch to the metric system.

You did plan and filled up the tank in Lone Pine before before you went to Death Valley, right? Right???

We got back last week from a 16 day vacation to Canada. Diesel was $6.50 a gallon USD (but less than $6 through Alberta). The favorable exchange rate helped (1 CAD = 0.77 USD).

When we left for vacation, the local Chevron wanted $5.16 per gallon for regular. When we returned, it was $5.66...

$4.60-5.00 for regular. I read that the high prices are lowering demand. The prices are what I expected to happen, when I decided to go with 4cylinder Camrys.

was told yesterday diesel on the water is up to $7.40 per gallon. I filled my Continental at $6.29 per gallon over the weekend, cost me $125.

No, I came in from the other direction, but yes, filled up in Ridgecrest.

And in Europe you can easily find cheap used vehicles that get 60+ mpg. We don't have that here. In the US, a vehicle that gets over 40 mpg is a rarity.

Also, $30/gal? I don't think gas is that high anywhere else...

I meant $30 per gallon when adjusted to income.

I'm paying $5.49 for super unleaded from Shell or Mobil in NYC. I only use super unleaded from Shell or Mobil for my 1988 528e and my 2001 530i. I do not drive as much as I did, pre-pandemic. So I have not felt the increase in any significant way.

I lived in Europe 30+ years ago when gas was this expensive. It kept all the crappy cars off the highway so that I could drive my E30 too fast. It was kinda nice, actually. Of course I was paid handsomely so the cost of fuel was not an issue for me, even back then.

When I do my next big E28 road trip, gas will cost more. I'm not losing sleep over it. It's baked into the cake.

The poorest people are always hurt most by inflation. It will take years to fix stupid energy policy. Slowly, CAFE standards are increased, most non-car people move to cheap electric cars that are cheaper to run, and we will still have our E28s. That's cool.

Up 60ยข a gallon here on Friday
at my local unbranded stop-n-rob.
$3.99 to $4.59, , and I've gotta put ~ 25 gallons
in Burbie's 42 gallon tank to get back and forth
from our FredNeck Acres this next week.
Sure wish I'd pulled in and filled it up
as we were pulling back in on Thursday afternoon.

If it goes over $10 it will probably be here...
