Proud New Owner of 1988 535is

Post by SuburbanLegend »

Hello all. I have been looking for this spec for years and almost settled on others that missed the mark.

I have been in the BMW community for almost 8 years as I have an e46 M3 (2004 Titanium Silver 6MT) as well. Before that I was in the Z Car community for almost two decades.

I have found this one on this forum and purchased it from a charming wife of a forum member that passed away unfortunately.

I took reception of the car this week and my oldest son and I are excited beyond words . This will be our project car that we work on together

We have cleaned, clayed, waxed, and light interior detailing so far. Thankfully we have several of the parts needed to get the car back to greatness from the PO.

Happy to be an actual member and not a lurker anymore.

Thanks all! The short droves around the neighborhood have been fun. Can't wait to get it registered for more compelling drives.

I am also compiling a list of needed things to do.

-Baseline fluid changes
-EBrake fix
-Rear brake light fix (works intermittently)
-Replace 1 reverse light bulb
-Track down small oil leak
-Think about brake upgrade

Got my IS in May, coming from the 02's, E39's, and E34's, this is a great group! Look forward to seeing this thing come back to life.

Nice! It's so great to hear that it went to a good home where it will be appreciated. I also found mine on this forum, under the "Unaffiliated F/S" thread. I had mine transported from Dallas to SoCal; your pics reminded me of the day it arrived:

As part of baselining I'd recommend changing out the two flywheel sensors, or at least keep a spare in your trunk. Years ago I had one go out on my E24 at a cars 'n coffee and it kinda ruined my day. Lesson learned; they were among the first things I changed on my E28 when I got it home.

Great stuff! We've been watching this on the other end from your friend's wife. I used to live out that way too GA/VA Beach -- Tidewater Baby!
You shouldn't have a ton of stuff to do here as she mentioned he kept up on things. Check your rear subframe mounts one of you just bounce on the bumper and the other one look to check the movement. Those and the rear dog bones are always toasty. Clean out throttle body, fresh fluids and rock out.

One thing that will scare the poop out of you:
If your car has LSD and you change the oil you will discover that your diff feels like it will fall apart shortly after you do so. Lots of chatter. Not to worry however all you need is an additive that goes in there with the change. I think I used the Amsoil one and make a bunch of figure-8's in the parking lot for 5 minutes no problem.

My car is also from a Decedent and I'm friends with his daughter so we have a pact I will never sell her and keep her in good nick.

Very nice looking car.... congrats! Enjoy it with your son.

BTW... you probably don't need a brake upgrade, unless you planning some track or auto-x days, or making engine modifications that increase your power substantially ... stock brakes are just fine, IMHO.

Thanks Chris, et al. This is such a great community and hope to meet some of you in person some day.

Also noted about the brakes. I only intend weekend drives and daytrips.
