Encounter with an M5 owner

Post by stuartinmn »

I got out of my M535i in a parking lot today, and a fellow came over to admire it. He said he had a US spec M5, but he wasn't using it much anymore and was thinking he should probably sell it. ~190k miles, tired paint and a small dent or two, but runs great, well maintained mechanically, zero rust. He said, "what are they worth, maybe $5,000 or $6,000?"

I suppose I could have whipped out my checkbook and said "Sold!" :) but I told him he better do some research, because they're worth a lot more than that these days.

(edited to correct title from M6 to M5.)

M6 or M5. You have us confused. You could have just said they're worth more but you're willing to buy it . . . now!

Wow, yeah the temptation to scoop up a deal versus educating him on market prices had to have been a tough call!

On a related note, I wonder how the Wu Flu related economic problems have affected the prices that sellers actually get these days? From what I can see, a limited snapshot for sure, they seem to be unaffected.

190k miles will keep the price down even if it's better than a 60k car with holes in the floor. People are stuck on that odometer.

Having dealt with rust buckets, I'll take miles over rot any day.

BaT buyers don’t seem to feel that way. Makes no sense.

as we've discussed, i would way rather have a 350k mile car, that someone drove the shit out of and (clearly) cared about, than some 50k mile POS that literally needs everything, from sitting around. the 350k car wouldn't have made it as far as it did, without care and maintenance. YMMV

Not to mention a 200k mile car that had everything done. Cleanest undercarriage of any of the cars listed around it and it did the worst.

My nicest car is also the highest mileage. Fanatically maintained with OEM parts wherever possible and I have all the records. Its at 235k but you would never know it unless you look really close at the windshield.
