I have been looking at a "yellow / brown stuff" under my hood for years since I got my BMW. I suspect this is something against rust like tectyl. Have you seen this before? I think it's very ugly, would you take it away or leave it? It doesn't come off just like that, I tried it with WD-40 and it is easy with that, just don't know if WD-40 is not bad for the paint? I got a photo of the white e28 from google, it has it too.

It's cosmoline, or some similar product (I don't know what it was called in German). It's common on BMWs of this era, and was put on as a rust protectant. WD-40 may work to soften it up and won't damage the paint, but people have used various other cleaners and methods to remove it - if you search here on the forum using the word cosmoline, you should be able to find other people's responses.
