Source for a NEW steel wheel for spare tire?

Post by RetiredDoc »

My car originally had 14 inch bottle caps. I replaced them with 15 inch Borbets, but the 1986 original unused Michelin spare on its 14 inch bottle cap remains in the trunk. I am content staying with the 15 inch Borbets. To me they look period correct.

I want to buy a 15 inch steel wheel to use for a new spare tire. My experience with used eBay wheels has been poor, so I have decided I definitely want a NEW wheel. Basically the steel ones like Bavarian Auto used to sell for snow tires, but Bavauto is now out of business.

Can anyone direct me to an on line source?

E28 steel wheels came in 14":
Steel rim 6JX14 ET:22 36111117251
Steel rim silber 6JX14 ET:22 36111123703
Steel rim schwarz 61/2JX14 ET:22 36111125676
Steel rim silber 61/2JX14 ET:25 36111119093

E34 came in 15":
Steel rim schwarz 7JX15 ET:20 36111180733
Steel rim schwarz 61/2JX15 ET:20 36111129381

Part #s should help you find what you need. Turner/Pelican/ECS Tuning bought much of Bav Auto's stock.

The standard E34 alloy "bottlecap" wheels are so cheap you could probably find one (or 4) for free without much trouble. Not sure why the steelie is important to you.

Every other thread I looked at on the subject digressed into “steel wheels suck,” or “ why you should get alloys.” Looks like we’re headed there already.

I guess I just figure if you're destined to have a miss-matched wheel for a spare, why not make it an alloy? If you're doing the steelie to save money, you'll likely spend more than you would for an alloy. That's all. I'm happy for you to explain why you prefer the steelie, or not, and I'll happily shut up. Just trying to offer an alternative to somebody's cheap after-market snow-tire wheel for you.

Sorry!

Digressed? I had the same thought as BMWCCA2 when I first looked at this thread earlier, and have to echo his question; what's so special about a steelie that you'd prefer it over another non-matching option that costs less and weighs less, and you hope to never have to use? Not trying to pick a fight, just trying to understand your thinking.

Steelie sounds cooler.

I've got this 6 1/2 X 15" aluminum factory wheel if you're interested. The best of both worlds, all the look of a steelie with half the weight.
