I'm in conditionally, the condition being that the lever is easy to install. I'm thinking two milled pieces that you'd bolt together to enclose the pivot pin and cable barrel end. You could machine it so the pieces slide into each other bear all the stress, while the bolt only keeps them from sliding apart. The more elegant it is, the more I'm willing to pay.

I'd been thinking about this too, I snapped mine in half when it was cold out. I'd be in if you make these.

I'm interested too. I pop my hood when returning home after every long weekend drive, to let the engine bay cool down faster. That plastic handle doesn't exactly exude an air of durability.

I’ll make one but not before the end of the year. Sorry guys, I’ve been simply to busy to finalize the project. :(

Pardon my interruption & thread hijack. Sorry Ben.

As time allows, I'm toying with designing this piece. Aside from creating a functional piece, there are multiple other factors that need considerable attention including material type, durability, fitment & the prototyping process. This is not to mention material & machining cost in addition to a price point that makes it worth the effort should said part be made available for sale.

Life keeps me pretty busy so I make no promises except to put forth some effort into the potential of making this a reality.

I made a base design that has been dimensioned relatively close to the original part using a set of calipers and some math. I'd say this is roughly +/- .0625" in tolerance. I say the word roughly very roughly as I do not have an engineering stamp, nor would I want to assume any liability. More details to come between now & the 2nd coming.

Teaser for now:

Great work, you guy should collaborate with one another as I know Ben has been quite busy. Btw, my latch handle has been replaced twice and fearing the one I have is about to give up the holy ghost! Hopefully we can get these made before the big man comes back. See what I did there ;)

I suspect you're right. I was noticing today that the pull distance of my handle seems longer than it used to be. The release point is now right up against the limit of the handle's range. In fact sometimes -- like when it's cold -- the release point is slightly beyond the handle's range and I really have to pull it hard too eek out that last bit of tension to get it to pop loose. I know this has to be straining the handle beyond what it was designed for.

Here's an interesting thread about adjusting the cable so it releases sooner:

https://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?f=3 ... adjustment

NOTE: about halfway down the thread there's a very astute warning that your hood may jam shut if you attempt to adjust it and don't get it quite right. The suggestion is to preemptively remove a couple of grill sections so you can access the underside of the latches and pop them loose if that happens.

I had this happen on my E36 after I swapped hoods.
It was quite the ordeal; I eventually got it open from underneath with a combination of many ratchet extensions and some contortion.

Definitely will be taking the grilles out any time I mess with hoods in the future!

When the handle fractured on the Borman 6 back in the last century, I sandwiched the piece between a pair of flat aluminum shelf brackets that I fashioned into shape on my bench grinder and drilled it for #8 machine screws. Never had to mess with that end again. Merry Solstice to all.
