New euro 528I owner

Post by Doubledutch »

Finally after looking for a few years I pulled the trigger 3 months ago and I purchased a very clean, well sorted (very early) Euro E28 that was delivered in Milan, Italy in Oct 1891. Car is very original with the exception of the radio and “Alpina”wheels .
I bought the car in my home country from a very well respected vintage BMW specialist (Oldenzaal Classics)in the Netherlands. The car was shipped to the US on a German car carrier and it was dropped off less then 10 miles from my house at Davisville Port in RI.
The registration was a bit of a PITA but not to bad just 2 extra trips because they were not to familiar with the registration procedure of a vintage EU car.
Very happy with the car, runs great and looks the part in my option, she will be in good company with my E9 !

Wow, congrats and a lot of us have seen Oldenzaal Classics website and their offerings for a few years now. Can you share some details about the purchase and importation process you went through with them?

Thanks Adam. To be honest the whole process was pretty seamless, I bought the car for Oldenzaal based on all the high rez pictures / video and other info they they proved me, wired transferred the $$ (yes that’s a bit nerve wrecking) they got me in contant with a freight forwarder in Amsterdam specializing in car shipments, I think they can provide transportation to any major city in the us. The Dutch car title and invoice was sent to me via fedex. I did have to go to the local customs agent for some verification of VIN and paperwork and once that was signed off on I was able to register the car. The local DMV also asked for some smog certificate but once I explained to them again that the car is more then 25 yr old which means in RI no inspection is needed (antique plate) they didn’t ask for it again. I know CA might be a lot harder to register a car without smog inspection.
All and all a pretty doable process, nothing too intimidating but I would check with your local DMV requirements

I hope this helped.

Thanks for the kind words guys and thank you for posting the pix, agreed icloud sucks.
I know it’s a very early 528I, would be nice to find out what the production date is, I guess I could email BMW classic in Germany and find out, either way cool to own a very early example of these beautiful cars.

For starters, plug the VIN in to RealOEM.com

I was looking at the interior shot and there's something wrong with the dash, very wrong. I don't see a single crack in it!

Seriously, welcome and nice looking car.

That's a beautiful car, and the exterior color is lovely. Congratulations!

Not 100% sure if this works for Euro cars, but it shows production dates. I've always been pleased that both my E28 and E39 were built on a Wednesday. :)

I also had that blue cloth interior on my first E28, a Balticblau 528e (M20) from 4/83. While it was mostly garaged, the sun really gets to that blue cloth. Yours looks quite good so far. Keep it clean and it should last awhile. Enjoy your new E28!

RealOEM confirms that the car was built in July '81 so a REALLY early car, I also emailed BMW classic to see if they have some more info on my car, lets see if they reply. Pretty cool to have one of the earliest, if not THE earliest E28 to have in the country.
Yes car is in great shape inlc the dash, there is a very small hairline crack that was finished but nobody needs to know that, pretty sure the car was kept indoors its entire life (only 2 owners, well 3 incl me) the velour interior is in very good shape but the color on the headliner and is a bit faded, no biggie.
if I knew how to embed pix i would upload a few more

They have to be hosted offsite to someplace like Imgur.com or Postimage.com Some places like Apple don't allow you to like directly. Google also makes it extremely difficult, although the last I knew it could be done. Follow Charlies link below. Like a lot of things, it's easy once you know how.

In love with this car. The superb color, the cloth seats, the wheels. And the stance reminds me of how much I liked mine before it was lowered. Plans? Nevermind, as-is is perfect.

Thank you for your kind words. I love the stance of the car too, I was thinking about lowering it a bit but I think i will leave it as is. The only upgrade I am thinking about is gettin a Mtech steering wheel if I can find one for a decent price. I did install a Bluetooth retro look blaupunkt radio, pretty pleased with that.
I will get some blue coco floor mats other than that I am just enjoying her as is.

About the steering wheel: mind that early E28's have a fine spline wheel & steering column. Later ones have coarse splines. I don't think there are M tech wheels for your chassis.

It's just the opposite - earlier pre-09/85 were coarse-, later were fine-splined. Coarse-splined M-Tech wheels do exist.
From realoem.com - Sports steering wheel M-technik (Diameter = 385MM), up to 09/1985, BMW part # 32339058695
