FS: Salvaged (but saveable!) 1988 m5 – Los Angeles

Post by ambdxtrous »

Hi all, I write this with a heavy heart as my e28 m5 was recently deemed "totaled" by insurance.

A teenager in a ford fiesta (WHY GOD, WHYYYY!) t-boned me at an intersection at roughly 10-15 mph. The drivers side door and passenger door took the most of the impact. The rocker took some damage and so did the pillar. The floor and roof are fully intact, no crimping and the frame has zero damage. Original style 5 wheels were also luckily untouched and in amazing condition.

It's certainly reparable with the right set of hands, or would make a great parts car for someone trying to restore another car. Not sure what has more value, the car restored with a salvaged title or turning it into a parts car, needless to say I need to sell the vehicle in it's current state.

Open to offers!

For more pics of the interior and rest of the car, this is the BAT link I bought it off of in 2021: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-bmw-m5-83/

Here's the details:
– Car ran and drove absolutely flawlessly, pulled strong all the way to redline, ac blows cold, heated seats work, all the power seat options worked, sunroof worked. The car drove amazing and looked incredible for it's age and it had been resprayed at some point in it's life.

What a shame. Glad you are OK. Hope you can get your money out of it. Looks like we've lost another really nice old M5.

Sad to see this. Especially after the BaT auction win.

Hopefully insurance treated you fairly and the car can be saved and will live on (versus parted out).

Yes everyone would like to know if you parted the car out or sold it to someone to repair or use for parts, do tell as we are all interested to find out where it ended up or with who…

B pillar caved in, I can see why insurance totaled it. Not that it's unrepairable and if it was 2 years old it would have been back on the road quickly, but it's not. It's a shame, looks like a sweet car.

I think he was asking in the $20s ? which I think is insane for the car and he keeps the rims.
Anyway you slice it at the end of the day its still a salvage title.

Updates for those interested:

I'm currently working with a local shop to get estimates on repairing the car.

Being that I'm also renovating a house, depending on the estimated cost of that I will either:
1. fix it and keep it forever
2. sell the car as is with the wheels with hopes it will go to a home that has plans to repair it, or at least put another M5 back on the road.

I received 12 serious offers in the range of 10-20k. I understand values on something like this in this condition are obviously completely subjective. Several interested parties seemed to be the type that were capable of repairing the car and had plans to drive it and enjoy it.

Even at $20k with someone capable of doing the labor themselves you're not going to get into a 118k mile M5 with dinan parts, mint interior and maintenance history for that price. It was a nearly pristine example prior to the accident and drove and pulled even better than it looked.

Personally, the salvage title on something like this doesn't bother me. Especially knowing the unibody is in-tact and not compromised at all. But to each their own.

I desperately want to keep it, will post again when we get numbers back.

Thanks all.

I bought and (had) repaired an e28 M5 that a kid hit and ran. It didn't look as bad as this, but did have a bent frame rail in front. Thankfully they're available NOS from BMW and I have a local body shop that specializes in vintage BMWs.
That said, it was pretty expensive to repair. I got mine much cheaper than it sounds like the ask is on this. This one looks MUCH nicer to begin with with less overall little needs.
