SOLD: 1985 535i Burgundrot/Pearl Beige - Madison, WI

Post by stjohnr »

VIN: WBADC7409F0652312

I bought this car in the Fall of 2016. It’s a 2 owner (myself the 2nd) 1985 535i. It currently has just over 101,xxx miles, of which I’ve put on the last 5k of. I’ve loved working on the car and intended to hang onto it much longer than I have, but I now have 2 kids and we are moving to Australia in December/January and I’ve run out of time to give the car any attention. It’s been a great little summer car and I’ve really tried to take good care of it. It has some rust from living in Wisconsin its whole life, but nothing that is detrimental to driving. The worst spots that I always said I would get around to fixing are a couple spots next to the front shock towers under the hood. Interior is really clean - leather is great, carpets are great, not smoked in, single crack in the dash, headliner is good. I’ll post the pictures I currently have of it from last fall and I’ll try to get some new ones up soon.

It has been sitting for about a year. I just got it running again after replacing the speed/reference sensors but I think the battery is totally done. I can’t get it to keep a charge, but if jumped it fires right up. It will also no longer idle - not sure what’s going on with that. Otherwise it runs just as it did when I parked it. It would be wise to swap the battery or trailer it away.

I’m looking to get $4000 obo. Comes with Bentley and all the extra parts I can find lying around.

Things I know it currently needs: Emergency brake (I have what I believe are all the parts for this), headlights, window wiper motors need cleaned and greased, some interior lights are out (I have the bulbs), Center support bearing (I have the bearing and guibo), hard fuel lines should be replaced (I have one on hand and the other in shipment)

New in the last 5k miles:

Complete suspension refresh (slightly lowered)
Bilstein struts/shocks (B8)
H&R lowering Springs
Spring pads upper/lower
Strut mounts

Complete Steering/control arm refresh
Steering linkage
Upper control arms
Lower control arms
Sway bar links
Tie rods
MWrench steering dowel (bolted in place but not welded, the bracket wasn’t broken)
Dave Pepin pedal bracket reinforcement
Alignment (after all the new parts were on)

Engine Bay
Head Gasket
Exhaust gasket
Intake gasket
Water pump gasket
Oil filter housing gasket
Duck gasket
Valve cover gasket
Oil pressure switch
Oil pipe
Oil pipe hollow bolts
Brake bomb (done by previous owner)
Radiator (done by previous owner)
Fan clutch
All Belts
Speed sensor
Reference sensor

Misc
Braided stainless brake lines
Brake hardlines (done by previous owner, not great, but functional)
Exhaust (done by previous owner)
Fuel Filter
In-tank fuel pump (used but good)
Fuel pump/filter hanger/carrier and associated hardware

Interior
OBC LED light bar replacement
JVC aftermarket radio install
Alpine Amp/Sub install
New speaker wires to all 4 speakers
Premium speakers (front/rear), not the tweeters yet, but I have them. I think one of the rear speakers is blown, I haven’t investigated but it doesn’t sound very good.
Cluster lights replacement

Thanks everyone for the messages. I've added pictures of the rust spots and did my best to capture all of it. I would be glad to give someone a video walk around of it if you're seriously interested and thinking of traveling to buy or shipping it. Just PM me and we can arrange a time.

Fantastic! The cars are getting fewer and rust like that is a challenge but not a deal breaker for the new owner. Great presenting car other than the r***!
