NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BARN FIND - 1988 M5

I have a 1988 E28 M5 barn find (parked in a windowless garage in 2004, recently discovered) just finishing a complete cosmetic restoration and going in for a complete paint job next week. 247,000 miles, absolutely rust free above and below, nearly immaculate interior, dry compression 165-185. Engine room is immaculate with all new stickers and properly repainted valve cover and plenum. Before the car was parked, all engine hoses were replaced with BMW hoses and the trunk and hood rubber seals were all replaced. All rubber is in excellent condition. The engine room has all new stickers, new hood sound insulation and various other new parts and is free of rust. The widow claims the engine was rebuilt around 1999, but we have no confirming paperwork. However, when the valve cover was removed, it and the valve tray were pristine and the valves did not need tuning.

The car has new oversized front rotors and calipers and the front end has been lowered by half an inch. BBS wheels have been restored with Wurth factory silver and have a new set of Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires. Suspension and all bushings are tight. Trunk is also immaculate and rust free. The self leveling system has been removed.

The head unit is a new Continental radio that matches the dash décor, with a new Massive Audio EQ9 equalizer mated with a trunk-mounted ADS 300W amplifier and ADS crossover, and two 15” Fosgate speakers. All 8 other speakers and 4 passive crossovers were upgraded to Boston Acoustics.

My intention is to have this car up on BaT within two months. At this point I would consider serious offers in the range this car is likely to bring on BaT.

Hey, what do you think this will go for?
Seems like the current price of entry for an e28 M5 is about ~$45k up to that latest high water mark at $90k (BAT a couple weeks ago).

Can you post some pictures of your car?

I have lots of photos of this car, as it went through the cosmetic restoration. However, since it is going in to the paint shop on July 5, I won't be posting any pictures until the paint job is complete. At that time, I will post the car on the MyE28 site for sale, prior to posting it on BaT. Members of this site are all keen watchers of BaT and know the value of these cars.

As to how much it will bring... ? Who knows? This M5 has a lot going for it, in spite of its 245K miles. Being completely rust free above and below, dry compression at 165-185, suspension in excellent condition with new oversize front rotors and calipers, and a completely reconditioned engine room. Add to that a complete tool kit, a pristine trunk, an interior in excellent condition, with a new head unit driving a new Massive Audio EQ9 equalizer mated with a trunk-mounted ADS 300W amplifier and ADS crossover, two 15” Fosgate speakers and 8 replacement Boston Acoustic speakers.

The mystery issue: The widow claims the engine was rebuilt in 1999, but we have no paperwork. However, when I pulled the valve cover to paint it, the entire underside, valve tray, cams, etc, were in pristine shape with zero oil shellac one expects to find. Ditto with the air plenum and trumpets. No valve adjustment was needed. Couple all that with the compression numbers and a fairly clean engine block to draw what conclusion? At the very least a head rebuild ?

The car comes out of paint around the end of July. There are some niggling cosmetic issues to deal with so watch this space and the for sale page around mid-August. Meantime, interested buyers may get a dialog going at sidman@sidekarr.com or 831 601-1776.
