FS: M5 - Wrecked

Post by eddie »

I am trying to figure out what to do.

Wrecked by a Hit and Run.

Fix? Sell? Part out?

I might be getting too old to fix it. I have been driving an e28 M5 for nearly 20 years.

167K. It still runs. Rolls but front suspension is bent.

Thanks, Eddie

ps: I have not been on the board lately ... I was pretty sick for a couple of years. Better now.

Even with escalating M5 values, front hits on unibody cars are a hard call. I suppose it depends on whether or not you have a top body man that's dependable and the level of damage you're faced with.

Odds are good your insurance provider will consider it a total loss, then you'd need to arrange a buy-back.

If it is salvageable, it does present the opportunity to do a euro conversion...

Eddie:

I am sorry about the M5 wreck! Hope it works out for you and the car.

If you do wind up parting it out, I would like to talk with you about buying all the trunk carpet trim pieces, if they are in good shape.

Thanks,
Mike

That stinks. Sorry to hear about the damage. Photos don't load, would be interested in interior bits if a part out comes as an option.

Certainly open to a rebuild project/effort of sorts as I have a full E28 structure and body panels for the front, and I know a professional welder who can weld anything (especially this 80's German grade of steel). We both have E28's too, haha!

I'd love to buy the car and get it back on the road if end up deciding you want to sell it.

I am not a professional body repair person but I did a little work. With a little pulling there is now radiator clearance. The hood almost closes. The radiator support and lower valance require replacement. The car might be drivable once the right lower control arm is replaced. The bumper ram supports need work.

The engine started up on the first try. The oil cooler drips a bit.

I want to sell the car whole.

Thanks,

I settled with the insurance company - Total Loss.

I bought the car back.

For sale "as is" as a complete running car. 167K miles

That's a tough ol' gal! Hope someone can bring it back to its former glory. These cars certainly deserve saving if at all possible.

Still interested in the trunk carpet pieces if the car isn't salvageable. But I hope it goes to a good home vs. parted out.

The car is a driver!

Replaced right Lower control arm.
Repaired bent power steering pump bracket.
Removed leaking oil cooler (M30 filter console swap).

More pics to follow.

Still looking to sell complete.

Thanks, Eddie

It hasn't sold so... that means the asking price is too high.

i've tried contacting the seller multiple times and got no response. i've given up and am no longer interested. he wanted $15k for it at one point. not sure how accurate that figure still is. best of luck to anyone else interested.

I was also told $15k which is unrealistically high. When you factor in the purchase price, logistics, repair costs and that it now has totaled/salvage history, you might as well wait things out as the economy continues to tank and people put stuff on fire sale.
