1988 535is FS

Post by ShwarzOrBust »

Putting up a for sale/feeler ad for my 1988 Alpineweiss 535is. Below is a list of pertinent facts & modifications the car has received. I purchased this car in March of 2018, and really hadn’t done much with it since I was wrapping up my undergraduate degree. As of late, it has been receiving any maintenance deemed necessary.

I’m home for a bit, my parents will be moving in the future as will I. I want someone to care for this car. Why do I want to sell? Moving to city & college loans.

Links to album https://photos.app.goo.gl/tmCRE9cKG8vEJwqv9, I tried dropping some photos below as well, let me know if they aren't visible

- Ownership:
o I am the 3rd owner of this 5er. I bought it from a great guy in St. Louis and had the car shipped (I really wanted as rust-free an example as I could get, New England sucks). As stated, I bought this car while I was in college, it is a fair-weather car.

- Mileage: 176,XXX
o I have put a total of probably 7k miles on the car during my ownership. Again, it has been garaged in the winters and only driven on summer breaks. Odometer and Cluster overall work great!

- Transmission: Manual – Getrag 265/5
o 9/10: Car received the Dave Kan Transmission swap by the second owner. The shift lever has minimal play and engages gears well. No issues.

- Exterior: Alpinewiess
o 8/10: The car shows off its factory paint and panels are in good shape, recently was paint corrected. There are some chips & dings that I tried to cover in my photos.
o Hood and Front Air Dam were resprayed
o Rust: The car is relatively rust-free as it lived in St. Louis and was never a winter car. That said, some small rust locations are the: driver side rocker just behind the front wheel, small amounts of surface rust near the rear windshield.

- Interior: Comfort Pearl Beige
o 7.5/10: The original VIN for the car declares that it should have the coveted sport llama interior, however, it currently shows off comfort pearl beige front and rear seats. The power seating buttons are operational with the implanted pearl beige seats, though the headrest option requires slight manual aid (maybe some grease would resolve this). The biggest issues with the current setup is a hole in the driver seat left bolster, and some slight ripping. The seat works fine. (Pics included otherwise just ask!)
o M-Tech 1 Steering Wheel and M-Tech Shift Knob
o Note: I do have the original front and rear llama seats, the rear bench, and back are in great condition and could be put in immediately. The passenger seat is in ok condition, and the driver seat will need a re-cover. I would recommend recovering both front sport seats for uniformity’s sake.
o Door cards and interior accessories all match the original llama interior.

- Engine: M30B34
o 8/10: I have had no issues with the motor during my ownership, the car fires right up, stays at proper temps, and doesn’t make any unusual sounds. That said, the car is 33 years old, it’s not perfect and does burn a small amount of oil, no leaks.

- Exhaust: IE Catback
o Replaced the OEM system with a stainless cat-back from Ireland Engineering.

- Suspension: Ground Control
o I received the car with it sitting atop a Ground Control Coilover conversion kit. I recently replaced the front shocks with a new set of Koni’s and all new GC hardware

- Brakes: e34 540i BBK upgrade
o Installed a full e34 BBK kit from a 540i. Also did stainless brake lines while I was at it. The upgrade replaces: Rotors, Calipers, Caliper Carriers and Pads

- Wheels: BBS RZ (Style 5)
o 8/10: These are not some show-quality, neck-breaking 3-piece wheels. They are 16 x 8 et23 BBS wheels that originally came from an e38 (7 series). However, they do look right at home beneath the wells.

- Tires: Nexen N Fera SUR4G
o Could use replacing, killed the fronts after not getting aligned soon enough, they are on the rear now.

- Maintenance
o Oil Change @: 173k
o Power Steering Flush @: 170k
o Battery @: 170k
o Wheel Bearings @: 171k
o Meyle Giubo @: 171k
o Febi Center Support Bearing @: 171k
o Complete shift bushing refresh @: 171k
o Exhaust @: 171k
o Bosch o2 Sensor @: 171k
o Output Shaft Seal @: 171k
o Shift Selector Seal @: 171k
o Febi Clutch Master & Slave @: 172k
o Meyle Thrust Arm Bushing @: 171k
o Meyle HD Upper Control Arms @: 172k
o Aluminum M5 Lower Control Arms @: 172k
o Lemforder Tierods @: 172k
o Meyle Steering Idler Arm @: 172k
o Meyle Steering Center Link @: 172k
o Meyle Sway Bar End Links @: 172k
o Nexen Tires @: 175k
o E34 BBK @: 172k
o Front Koni Shocks @: 172k

- Notable Concerns
o Interior: Doesn’t match VIN, but will include the llama seats
o No A/C
o Having issues with my driver side running lights not turning on
o Front Right blinker currently out
o Sunroof needs manual aid to open completely backward
 The tilt forward function works great!

I’m listing this car for $10k. I’m open to negotiate, not to trade (unless you have an e46 M you want to part ways with). Cash is king. Please don’t hesitate to ask more about the car, I’d like to be as transparent as I can be. I am driving it occasionally around town, mileage is fluid, but will remain in this ballpark.

I'm unfortunately not interested, but I just commented on the seemingly less than relevant price message. I've no doubt it'll sell!

It seems like no matter how much info is presented in an ad, or how transparent a seller is trying to be, someone on this forum just has to come by and find a way to start crapping all over it. Really tired of it; grow up.

Why not just ask for a price?

Nice detailed write-up. Looks like most of the heavy lifting maintenance items have been done. The biggest detractor I saw looking through the photos were the mismatched beige comfort seats, but then I read that you have the original Llama sports seats and rear bench. Might be worth adding a few pictures of those to your album--Alpine White over Llama is a great color combo, especially on a 535iS!

Leadphut, I was only commenting on the "competition" message above. Not on his ad. His ad is good and the car sounds very good. I saw no reason for the guy to comment using posts from 4 years ago as price competition as things have changed significantly since then due to insatiable demand for these and other vehicles. Best
