If the stated age of the current owner is true then I imagine he's liquidating because... you can't take it with you when that time comes. Seems like he bought all the cars in the mid-1990's, which would have been a great time to buy these! Curious if EAG tried to swoop in with a lowball offer and weak story to mark the cars up to a million each.
