Uncertain, so I’ll have to say no. Will look back and see if I can find that part of the discussion with former owner.

It's a nice job, that chain guide job. It is a key to keeping the engine running well and as a side benefit it fixes all the oil leaks.

I prefer the GAS German Auto Solutions tools for doing the job.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably end up keeping the car, and that will give me a job to look forward to. Doesn't look that much harder than the M50 top end I just got done with.

Great car, love mine but yours looks nicer. Only gripe is I prefer black body trim-- maybe because of e28's? haha

You can always pull the painted trim and put on the good old black. The 01 to 03 5 Series more often had body matched painted trim. I assume it was an option, perhaps standard. The 01 03 models also more often had gloss black exterior trim around the windows, etc tops of the exterior doors.

E39 540 is a lot of car for the money and I believe the e39 sedan and wagon is one of the best cars ever developed.

I have extensive experience with e39s and I find them to be delightful.

Doug was very thorough with his timing chain guide replacement based on our discussions! He is a soldier! A total champ! This job is a journey and his photos showed me a very clean (like new) and very nice / clean engine and I shared every helpful tip I could think of while he did it.

In fact I did one around the same time!

The M62 vanos V8 is a very good engine with a timing chain system that needs to be replaced after 20 or so years, sometimes sooner but I'll tell you his engine looked so clean inside.

I usually see them a sort of brownish color inside and once I actually did a job on a sludged up 740 where the cams cut through the sludge and made nicely engineered sludge cutouts.

The fresh oil change after the job broke up the sludge and I had to blow the oil filter out many times as the oil pressure light was flickering while warm due to the gunk filling the filter! At the time I think I used 3 bottles of kerosene or whatever is in that cheap engine flush. And maybe 1 or 2 more oil changes.

Doug's engine looks like you could eat a very nicely oiled breakfast off of it and wash it down with a glass of fresh blueberry coolant. Yum.
