Maybe there is, indeed, no catch.

I bought my first BMW in Greenwich, CT, from a private owner who had just replaced his daughter's E21 with a new E30. I paid $8300 in 1985 for a 1981 320i 5-speed with 44k miles. Everywhere else I was looking, these cars were going for up to $10k with sketchy information, sometimes more at a dealership. This guy had a lot of money and he just wanted to price it to sell quickly.

I was only 23 and was taking out a 2-year car loan of $7500 (my payments were $363.79/month). I was nervous and my parents thought I was making a mistake buying a "used" car for as much as they paid for their new Chevy Citation. It was worth every penny and got me hooked for the next 28 years!!

I am sure no one following this thread would be interested in buying this M5, but I found it interesting that this is a US spec M5 converted to euro and sold in Europe. Clearly S38 powered.

There are a couple of those floating around in Europe. They tend to stay on the market for awhile.

Yeah I remember the Frenchman that bought that clean one back in December or so. And then I recall another diving board M5 on ebay somewhere in DE.

Clean rust free E12 528i with 99,000 miles.
One of the nicest early 5 series BMW's around. Car was sold new in Boston area and then spent time on display at the Museum of Transportation.
Runs and drives excellent. Rides and handles excellent. Stops and corners like a race car.

Suspension Techniques springs (lower than stock).
Bilstein struts.
Recent complete brake job.
Davis Racing custom made large aluminum radiator. ($700.00)
Newer fuel tank. (OEM)
New clutch.
New drive shaft.
New fuel suction pump and fuel sending unit. (OEM)
Synthetic fluids. Engine, transmission and rear differential.
Rust free body and undercarriage.
One repaint in original Alpine White that looks great.
European style halogen headlamps. (Hella) Deleted side marker lamps.
European bumpers installed using New Old Stock parts bought from BMW. (1,200)
Clean interior. No rips or tears. Rear seat has a repair to bottom cover that looks OK but could be finished better.
Dashboard is crack free other than Two 1/8 long tiny cracks near seat belt warning lamp.
Runs smooth and powerfully. Custom large aluminum radiator. Newer hoses and factory silver Bosch plugs. Newer Bosch battery.
All power windows, sunroof work. All glass is factory.
Nakamichi detachable face cd radio with amp custom installed in trunk under package tray.
Real (not reproduction) staggered Alpina wheels with like new Michelin Pilot Exalto a/s tires. Even the spare wheel is an Alpina. No scrapes or dings.
Custom machined retainers for BMW center caps. If you can find them the Alpinas sell for $2,500 to $3,000 just the wheels alone.
With the tires and center caps they are worth half my asking price for the whole car.
Some service history and manuals included.

Things needed....
Ignition switch is worn. Just need to lift up on key while starting. A/C need belt and recharge. Blower motor squeaks sometimes on low speed. Rear diff pinion seal starting to leak.

Tell me what you guys think about this one, a xi, doesn't specify what model. Are all E30 xi's the same engine/model?

Wifey called it "fun", based upon the pictures.

Thanks for the tidbits. Lord knows we get hammered with snow up here, and this area must be the perfect proving grounds for an AWD car.

Thing is, I also see a 2001 xi sedan for $6500, and a 2002 touring xi for $7000. Seems like you get a lot more car (and doors) for not much more there. But $5k for an E30-anything S14-less with rust, even minimal, seems high to me. Maybe the ix's get a premium, all things considered. If the car was $3k I might buy it up, if it isn't a rust case.

Anyhow, here's a very short WI listing for a "mint" '88 528e for $5k, for you zany E28 heads:

Gorgeous and extremely well cared-for 1988 E28 BMW M5. This car is optioned with heated seats and is in the US spec Black with Natur (tan) leather interior. These cars were hand made by BMW Motorsport and feature the legendary S38 engine. The car features many the popular upgrades of Bilstein HD rear shocks, a modern Blaupunkt radio, and the Turner Motorsports chip. Otherwise, it is stock. I have many pages of documentation on the car and it runs and drives perfectly! Dont miss a chance to own the legendary first M5! The car has 170,000 miles and a clean carfax.

Super eta, looks to be relatively clean, although a little rust seems to be peeking out behind the right side front wheel well.

I just talked to the owner. A "small" leak & It has rust in the floorboards :bawl:
I was on my way up there until he mentioned a 6"X6" hole in the passenger side floor. :(

I was all set for a winter project too, but learned the hard way. Where there is visible rot there is hidden rot. And I don't want to deal with any more leaks due to tin worm.

My M5 is out there...somewhere.

"Back up for grabs is my beloved s50 swapped e34 touring with the M5 kit on it. I've owned this car for about 2 years now, but it has been sitting for about a year after I bought my current e30. The car was running before being left in my garage for quite some time, however, after a potential buyer had the car checked out at BMW Bellevue I was informed that either the head gasket was blown or there was a cracked cylinder head. I would love to fix it, but cannot afford to at this time.

While the car was sitting in my parents driveway prior to me moving it into my garage, someone in my family took it for a ride and left the sunroof ever so slightly cracked. It rained for at least a solid week before I noticed the condensation on the windows one day. Needless to say, the interior was ruined and is in awful shape. I am in the process of removing every piece of it. There are a lot of good plastic parts from the interior I can clean up from the mold and what not, but as far as carpet, seats, etc. you wouldn't even want to see them. I've tried using space heaters, bought some of that stuff you find in beef jerky bags and nothing could get the moisture out."

Wow; that's a shame. Still might make for a good project though. Too bad its so far away. :bawl:

I have a good daily driver e28 535i that I am now listing for sale as I bought a house and now have other priorities. The car runs and drives beautifully and is ready for a new owner.

The car originally came from Florida and has only been in New England for a little while. I have the last Florida title and a pile of receipts for past work done. The receipts include a huge amount of high dollar work including a transmission rebuild and complete r134a AC retrofit including a new compressor.

The car comes with a manual transmission swap kit including a Getrag 265 transmission, driveshaft, clutch, flywheel, pedal box, master and slave cylinders, and all hardware and lines.
The spare is a matching e32 Style 1 wheel with a brand new (sticker still attached) Continental tire
A long range remote locking system is installed, connected via the truck switch

I have additionally done a lot of maintenance and repair work while I have owned the car. My log is as follows (a more readable Excel file available by email):

Yooro-pean E34 M5:

We are selling this car for one of our customers. 1989 BMW E34 M5 with the 3.6L multiple throttle body ///M5 engine connected to the fabulous 5 speed transmission. Vehicle is very rare and is in nice shape. Runs and drives great with cold air conditioning. This car has been in the south and shows no signs of rust. Engine sound and runs great. Vehicle has been garaged. If you are looking for a nice M5 this could be the one for you. Serviced by Carmine's Import Service the last 5 years. You may call him with any questions about the vehicle. 336-993-5506. Ask for Carmine. He can also send you the service records on file for this car. Tires are fairly new Contintental DWS all season performance. Spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor are all recent along with a valve adjustment. Only modifications the vehicle has is DINAN chip and camshaft gear and a performance exhaust. Interior is really nice with the only minor flaw being the headliner if you want to call it that. All systems seem to function. Airport pickup possible at the Piedmont Triad International airport located about 15 minutes from Carmine's Import Service. Visit www.carminesimport.com for more information on where this vehicle has been serviced and repaired for the last 5 years. Official BMW color of this M5 is Macaoblau Metallic.

Hmmm. Nice splitter. The driver's seat seems pretty worn for 78k. Nevermind the shift boot and e-brake.
