1985 BMW 745i Turbo. Grey market import. Runs, drives exc. Very rare! - $3750 (La Plata MD)

I have a very rare 1985 european model grey market import BMW 745i turbo. This was a diplomat's car that was imported in the late 1980's. As far as 1980s BMW's go, this is about as good as it gets. It has the 250 hp 6 psi turbocharged 3.5L straight six engine and the low profile European bumpers. This car runs and drives excellent and can be driven home. It is smooth, quiet, and powerful and steers and stops great. It just ticked over 150,000 miles. It does not smoke or burn any oil and the engine reaches the 6 psi boost level and has plenty of power. The automatic transmission shifts very nicely and does not have any issues. The electronically-selectable sport shift mode for the transmission works correctly. The interior is in very good condition. This car has the optional water buffalo leather seats, which are in really surprisingly nice condition for a car this age. All of the power windows work, and all of the power seat functions work. This car has no rust on the body or underneath, but needs some minor dents repaired and paint work to be as nice as it should be as a collector car. The passenger's front fender has a bunch of golf ball sized dents on top where a tree branch fell on it, and there are a few misc. dings in the doors and one on the roof. The fender dents could be pulled and filled but I would honestly source a good used oe fender and have it painted to match. I have the euro staggered headlight setup but have not reinstalled it on the car yet. I put US model 735i headlights and grills on it for the time being, because I needed to repair the aiming mechanisms on the euro lights.
More about the history of this car:
I bought this car from a friend about a year ago. He had owned it since the 1990's. This car was daily driven up until around 2006 when it was taken off the road for some minor upgrades that he never finished, and the car then sat in storage up until last year. His unfinished project was that he had removed the factory large case euro 2.93 open differential and sourced a medium case US limited slip differential that he planned on swapping in, but when he realized you can only use the large euro differential in this car, he gave up and never finished putting the original differential back together. When I bought the car last year, I simply put the original 2.93 differential back in the car and then I was ready to clean it up and get it road ready.

Through 2006, the previous owner had performed the following work:
* remanufactured transmission valve body
* new stock type turbocharger
* full valve job, cylinder head milled, new head gasket
The above work was done around 140,000 miles. The car now has 150,000 miles, so the top end and turbo are still very fresh. When I got the car last year, it ran excellent, so I then I went through all the mechanical systems to make sure the car was safe to drive.

This past year, 2012-2013, I have done the following work:
* replaced 4 speed automatic transmission front pump bearing and seal (was leaking fluid)
* installed Superior/Fairbanks teflon input shaft sealing ring upgrade kit (cross leaks due to steel input shaft sealing rings on this model transmission is a known issue. This trans did not have any cross leaks but I upgraded it since I had the trans out of the car already to do the front seal/bearing)
* replaced the "A" clutch pack in the trans, which did not need replacing but is a known weak point of this trans so I did it just to be on the safe side
* new PGW windshield
* all 4 brake calipers new TRW
* machined all four Brembo drilled brake rotors
* Axxis Metal Master brake pads
* all new rubber hydraulic brake hoses
* rebuilt rear CV axles
* 18x8.5" Antera wheels and Pirelli Pzero Nero 235/40/18 front, 265/35/18 rear tires
* replaced climate control vacuum servos as necessary. Automatic climate control now works (AC not charged yet, working on that, I already bought an R134a TVX and o ring kit. I have my own professional AC flush kit and vacuum pump and plan on re-sealing, flushing, and charging the system shortly.)
* replaced idle air stabilizer valve
* replaced intake vacuum hoses as necessary, tested to ensure no vacuum leaks

What a bizarre yet interesting car! Why would anyone leave the hood with that complete pile of poo on it? I thought that was a reflection at first and I guess it must be original paint in faded condition that there's no point in painting until you paint all of it...

At least the price is reasonable since you'll be spending a few times that amount to get this car right. But right it will be... once those wheels are melted down and replaced... :)

Looks like some nice pictures and a carwash are worth a few thousand, not saying I dont like the car though.

That's one for the Thread of Randomness for sure. Walkaround video from some random guy on a bike that liked the car? Is that even the car? The world may never know. ;)

Two possibilities in the MD/DC/VA area:

http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ ... 13438.html
1980 BMW 528i 5 speed - $3950 (Richmond)

1980 BMW 528i 5 speed. The suspension, cooling, brake, fuel and steering systems have either been completely rebuilt or received many new parts. The car is mechanically sound, and completely stock except for the newer BMW factory wheels (even has the original Blaupunkt radio-still works). The car has a 3/2014 Virginia inspection sticker and has 108,000 original miles. The engine pulls strong, transmission shifts as it should and has been stored in a heated garage. Power windows, locks and cruise control. Clear title in hand.

$3,950.00 firm. Willing to entertain trades for a manual E34, E39 or 912/911/928 project (what do you have)? Email me if you're interested or have any questions. Thanks for looking.
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/ ... 92010.html
1988 BMW 535 IS - $2400 (Kensington MD)

I will provide accuracy with disclosure in the interest of your time and mine.

The car is an '88 535is. I purchased the car from the second owner who was a mechanic at a BMW dealership. He purchased the car from the original owner upon trade in. He maintained the car since new. The car is an "IS", but spoilers and sport seats have been replaced with standard valance and seat.

Interior is in good shape with exception of driver's seat leather. Included with car is matching leather from another seat with same color and patina. Dash looks good and maintains a new ABS molded dash cover. All gauges work as does a/c, but a/c has been blowing it's fuse, so I don't use it. Sunroof and 3 of 4 windows work, but an extra switch and power window motor are included with car. Interior is very presentable, but it is time for a new radio. It still has the original so nothing has been butchered with the wiring harness.

Wheels are factory BBS 16 X 8.5 from a 7 series. They have relatively new 225/55 tires. The suspension and brakes are dead on solid with the exception of a clunk from the right rear wheel with hard acceleration. A replacement half-shaft comes with the car. The car is a smooth ride, yet agile and crisp.

Drive train is great. The M30 and 5 speed are at their best. Clutch is good, transmission perfect, power band is incredible. It also has a limited slip rear. The exhaust is less than perfect, but can be patched or replaced easily and economically. There are no leaks of dripping of fluids from this car.

The car was stripped, bumpers/all trim removed and all windows removed except rear for a total respray to seal everything up. Car is a no rust/collision car, repainted the original diamondswartz metallic this winter; this was its first and only repaint. It is not a $3000 show paint job, but a very presentable driver. New weather-strip on all door windows and windshield. It is my driver and could use a good cleaning in/out, brightwork is good.

The price is reflective of market value. It is not perfect, but a weekend in the garage away from being dam near perfect. I have a couple early 5 series in addition to this, so it is a bit of a duplicate. I need a little more space but am not desperate to sell it off, so no low ballers please. Great looking, reliable, safe driving car. I would consider trades for vintage BMW motorcycle, e24, pre '76 Benz or ????, but no rusty vehicles. Prefer cash though.

I will be available this weekend and may have some flexibility mon-tues. If not sold by Wednesday, I will take it up to the farm and tuck it away in long term storage.

Another Bavaria. Looks like Atlantik Blau like my old '72 Bav.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/3905801414.html
Quick Facts:
- 1973 BMW Bavaria
- 3.0L engine with dual carbs
- 4 door sedan
- 4 speed automatic
- original motor
- 79363k on the odometer, not sure of actual miles
- original interior, chrome.
- mostly original paint.
- virtually no rust
- in my time: new brakes, new regulator, new distributor cap.
- re-built transmission last fall by previous owner.
- I bought it to drive, not show, so it works great for me. Enjoy as-is turnkey or bring it to the next level cosmetically.

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/3908828052.html

Also a driver/beater 533i 5spd is listed in Morgantown, Pa for $1000 obo.
An interesting survivor: 1984 BMW 533i 5-spd, A/C, PW. Very little rust, currently PA registered as an antique. Maroon paint (original color) is faded and peeling, black leather interior is worn but no tears or holes. The engine is strong, clutch and trans work well, only mechanical fix needed is it's a little rough on cold start and sometimes stalls until it's warmed up. The metric wheels and tires went to hell as they should; now has 205/60's on nice aftermarket wheels. I have owned the car for about ten years; used it regularly several years ago then stored it intending restoration. Time to move on. Yours for $1000 obo. Please no emails: call 267.994.1965 to see or for more information.

I don't think this seller knows exactly what he has, but it appears to be a low mileage "is" that needs paint and possibly more due to sun damage. Beware of 0-feedback eBay sellers though...especially in Florida.

The seller in this addy looks to be our very own Bill_in_MN (how many Bills could there be in MN who are into old BMWs? ;) ) Seems to me I've seen him advertise this car here before, but the search gerbils are not smiling on me today. I couldn't even get the photo links to work; if someone else had better luck with that, please link to them.

Or hey... Maybe Bill can chime in with his own photos, or maybe even put up an ad! What a novel idea!
1989 BMW 635csi - $3500 (N. of Brainerd)
I'd posted this car for sale a year ago, drove it while the ad was still up and couldn't bring myself to sell it at the time. Who was I kidding.....I've only put about 400 miles on it since then and the reality is that it's going to deteriorate just sitting there and it needs a home with someone that will take care of it.

-135k miles
-very, very straight
-Bilstein Sport struts/shocks/HR springs.
-big brakes (e34 M5)
-Euro manual Sport Seats (OEM comfort seats go with it). These are extremely hard to find and no, I will not sell them separately.

I bought it sight unseen several years ago with the thought of putting a 5 sp. in it and turning it into a track/DE car. When I took delivery it was significantly cleaner/straighter than I could have imagined and I couldn't bring myself to mess with it. Aside from the brake/suspension upgrades this is a box stock e24 and is a great highway cruiser.

Like any old car there are some warts.
-AC needs a recharge. I never drive it enough to worry about it.
-some dings/chips/blemishes. None are bad at all.
-a few cracks in the dash. They are not bad enough to warrant replacing it
-I start it up once a month. Sometimes the battery was low, sometimes it wasn't. I put a new battery in it this spring and so far so good.
-SI battery in the instrument cluster needs replacing. I never got around to doing it.

I've owned too many old BMW's to even count and don't BS around when it comes time to sell one. This is a car that needs the very minimum of TLC to be perfect or it'll give years of enjoyment the way it sits. I make no bones that it's a show car....it's not. It is, however, one of the nicest "driver" examples out there right now and it has no secrets.

The price is n $3500 and is firm.

I've been asked as to why two of the pics have snow in them. I pulled the car from the garage late last winter and took some pics. Its condition has not changed and it has not been driven in the winter.

It is in fact Bill in MN's car. It is very clean and is a steal at this price. I have driven it, and it is clean inside and out. I will tell him to put up some pics.

Yep, it's mine. For some odd reason the pics work for some people, not for others. I'd posted it for sale on this board and got tired of dealing with the usual BS that comes with it so I held off this time.

It's really as clean as advertised, perhaps cleaner. If it didn't have a few small issues it would be a 5k car but it does and given that it's appropriately priced. I need to make room for another track car project and it needs to go away.
