Hi,

burnout video??

Image

I hope you get your issues sorted quickly and still looking forward to see some dyno results from your bimmer.

My 524TD also have a new issue, it stopped to running properly and when i look at the cambelt i found this:

Image

After that i was happy that rough running was all was happend. Anyhow i will take this event as starting point to swap the turbo to an Switzer S2B with a quick spool valve.

Best Regards

My belt jumped only on teeth and valves where making contact with pistons.... god thanks just enough to make mark on the soot on the tip of the piston

are you using dual ported stock exhaust and dual ported turbine chamber.... remember that you cant use spool up valve in exhaust manifold which is dual ported....

Hi,

i will use the stock manifold but will remove the split wall in the manifold between the three cylinders front and three cylinders backward.

Dont ruin that stock manifold, make adapter flange without wall...

Hi Dieselboost... I have a quick question ... will a hx35 fit a stock m21 manifold with hitting or coming into contact with the engine or anything?? i have managed to source a hx35 from a iveco truck engine, but i want to know if it will fit on my stock manifold because i cant afford a custom manifold at the moment...cheers

It will hit valve cover. Need to raise and/or tilt a little the turbo.

I welded two flanges together with a small angle and threaded flanges for studs.

Thanks for the reply! i did a mock up today never going to fit with the stock manifold, i am now considering buy one of those ebay m20 manifolds and adapting it to fit an m21... has anyone tried that yet??

One guy made that m20 manifold for m51 engine.... it's quite easy to do...

there is one irritating thing about those long tubing manifolds in diesel... your turbo just wont spool up....
stock is way better manifold... even up to 300hp diesel is so different than gas engine...

Hey Dieselboost nice to hear from you, very interesting info about the m20 manifold because i was just about to buy one tomorrow...so did you keep the stock manifold on yours? if so what did you use to make it fit? some kind of flange extension adapter thingy?

on a side note, i have noticed that my air filter has quite a lot of oil in it from the crankcase breather hose, is that definitely just down to engine wear/blow by, or maybe something more simply, because it shows no other signs of being worn starts first turn doesnt use oil, has good power and good mpg.

also what is the max power i can get with a hx35 and a stock but heavily tweaked pump?

mine is the same except does not start on first crank, i get a little puddle in the bottom right corner of my airbox. someone was saying to me that it was either the turbo seals or the oil rings on the pistons but that i dont know and that was coming from someone who just knows diesels in general not specifically this one so i dont know but i have oil in there too. What is acceptable blow by though?

I made my exhaust manifold by my self from "black iron watertube" 90degree corners and strait tube... its design is same than in stock manifold, but with larger diameter of tubing... cause my cylinder head has larger valve seats and valves + larger ports... so stock manifold has too small port diameter for my cyl head...

put that crank chase breather under the car directly to outside

i i remember your m20 manifold withs quite easily to m21 you need modify cylinder head side flage little bit.... turbo flange fits nicely i think...

it is possible that you need to cut apart cylinder head flange... and weld it in another place.... (i really dont remember how bad it was) but anyway it can be fitted to m21

that is indeed the crank chase breather... remove it from airbox...
it can be turbo still.... but if it works... so what? ;)

Hey there.!

Interesting thread you got here, will definately be following in future ;)
I've always had a weak heart for bimmer's and will probably always have  but until now I only had my hands into the gasoline engines so i have only very little knowledge of diesel engines.

A week ago i got my hands into a cheap E34 imported from Germany with M51D25TU OL also known as the tds engine, this car is only for fun so it will not be driving daily.

So i had some questions and searched the net and stumbled upon this thread which is the closest i have goten to my answers, so i hope you will help out a owner of the little sister to the E28 with M21

#1 First of all i read a lot about the head on these M51 engines to fail making cracks in the alloy (is there anyway to strengthen the head so it can take higher boost?)

#2 Next M51 exhaust manifolds design does not fit to what i want to make and the turbo flange is unusable for aftermarket turbo's (will M21 exhaust manifold fit a M51 head)

#3 I have thoughts about if the buyable M20 turbo manifold will fit to this engine or can be modified to do (in few posts before this i read that the turbo will have problems to spool if this is the matter this question is of no use then we want it all to work nicely)

#4 I've gotten my hands into a Eaton M65 twin screw compressor and would really like to fit to run side by side with the turbo (can this be done without a new ECU or do i have to get my hands into a megasquirt.? oh and will the diesel pump be able to feed the engine also?)

Thanks in advance..

I bought the car because we just got a son and this car will be a car we are going to make together when he gets old enough to understand and help  I have no idea where this will end but i will make a hell lot of modifications to this engine and if it blows up it blows up.

If anyone knows a other place to get help with the M51 engine please tell where i don't want to be in the way if u only talk about E28 :)

1: Reason for cracks... Very small stock turbo and too small exhaust manifold... makes extpressure and heat... usually with evrymod these stock parts are idiotic...

2: m21d24 ext manifold does indeed fit in m51 (i has m51 ext manifold for inspection run in m21) m21 exhaust manifold fits in m51 upside down... this means flange is top side... (if you get m21 manifold... be sure that it is 524TD manifold and not 324TD version with small flange)

3: you can modify those m20 manifolds to fit in m51 but you need to change the flange... ports are in offset and bolts are in different positions (we did this once with one m21)

4: you dont need new ecu etc... (you cant use megasquirt because it is diesel engine) your inejection pump gives about 200hp with evrymod or hammermod
so go ahead use those chargers freely...

btw if you want that your engine works with power... buy an mls gasket from gasket to go and remember update your cooling system...

well.... news...

i dont drive in this summer with my car... too much to do if i want to take it on the road...

in next winter i will make some improvements to it, and some of my old parts will be for sale...

like my intake and exhaust manifolds... old turbo and maybe the injection pump too...

Many thanks for reply this gets things sorted a bit for me :)

So if I improve the flow of the engine it could help avoid craks.. am i right??

I searched danish webs for a used 24td manifold and the only one avaliable atm is for 324 (the flange that is smaller is the turbo flange right?) but i was thinking of making on myself just like you did, i have access to stainless steel tubes which i could weld together and make one with same design as 24td (turbo upwards), i would like to have the turbo fitted upwards to be able to fit a bigger one

For the m20 manifold, is it worth buying on from new http://static.schmiedmann.dk/ProductPic ... 88_big.jpg to make it fit and will the engine be able to spool the turbo through it? or would it be more reasonable to make one myself? I am thinking of making one that looks a bit like this http://static.schmiedmann.dk/ProductPic ... 80_big.jpg :D

About the ecu, great to know. then i won't waste money on that  i know about evrymod, but what is hammermod? cant find anything on the web about it!? (which one is the best to use and/or can I use both) how many hp can the 24td pump deliver i was thinking of gettting one to push some more fuel through..!

Nice MB system btw  was thinking to make a custom bypass valve for my system when i fit the compressor, with a throttle body from a gasoline engine and a actuator. I just dont know how to make the actuator open when turbo starts making pressure.. any ideas how i can make this work?

Awesome and thanks for the link to gasket to go, couldnt find anything about where to get one ;) What do u mean about updating the cooling system? btw its the radiator without expansion box on the side, it has expansion box at center near window which i think is better (had some problems through time with the other system where expansion box is on radiator, leaks, poor cooling and so on  )

Anyway thank you very much for replying this really healped me out and nice project :D

looking forward to see what you are making of the diesel monster and will be hanging around to keep myself updated on things :)

Yep better engine flow lowers the risk of cracking... due to heat

indeed 324td flange is very small and better make a new one by your self

you can use m20 manifolds moddet to m21 but long tubing manifolds make your turbo very laggy, this ones design is good for diesel indeed http://static.schmiedmann.dk/ProductPic ... 80_big.jpg BUT it is for 24v m50 engine

you dont need make any ecu mods... only hammer mod or evry... google hammer mod (it is hard to tell, cause i dont use electric pumps, only mechanical)
but with stock 10mm rotorhead and electric pump 2mm cam plate about 200hp or bit more...

you dont need bypass in your engine... turbo surge is quite tolerated up to 2.5bar but this depends about what turbo you has...

better cooling is that get an very large aluminum radiator like griffin etc.... and i use stock expansion tank.... + i drilled 3x 3mm holes to the thermostat...

Good news everyone (with farnsworth voice)

My project is on going again... just bought few parts for my td... like new shifter and repair kit for bushes..
new front shocks, new clutch plate...

so i can repair all damage for the next summer...

but the next big thing is that is has new turbo.... Garrett T04B/E hybrid with my 0.63ar turbine chamber from master power...
and this is fitted to the exhaust manifold and after that is sitting on a top my master power with 0.84ar turbine chamber...

so yes guys... in the next summer... i can boost while i boost.... compound here i come!
