Well, now that my e28 M5 project car looks to be complete (as a 2+ year project) I'm ready to learn about another vintage BMW and make something unique out of it. So yesterday, I bought a 1972 2002 tii shell and I'm ready to start on another project that I've been contemplating for quite a while. I expect it will take a couple years, as I'll need to spread the $ out over a long period of time (or my wife will surely kill me), not to mention finding the many needed parts for this custom restoration will take time and effort (so far I just have this shell and an S14 engine, and an idea for a "M2" version of a 2002 that has the Turbo-look).
The shell is in great shape, i.e., straight with no rust, as it was a southwest car prior to the guy I bought it from (in NJ) getting it as his "project car" 5+ years ago. He stripped it, did some minor body work, sanded it, and primed it with self-etching primer. In been in his garage every since. He also had the Turbo fender flares, front spoiler, and side skirts for it.
I brought a friend, who is also somewhat of a '02 expert , with me to look at it and he give it the "thumbs up" after crawling all over & under it... so the deal was done. It took four of us, and a floor jack, to pick it up and carry it out of the garage and into my trailer. Now, I'll see if I can't finish what this guy had started. The project plan and parts search begins!!
New project had it's beginnings yesterday

[QUOTE="Damon in STL"]Roy,
Will it become a track car? I had the pleasure of spending some passenger time in a '02 track car two weekends ago. What a blast that thing stuck like glue! I can't imagine what it would be like with around 200 hp.

My M5 is the "designated" track car... so, the '02 will be weekend car, with extra giddy-up. At least that's the plan right now!

[QUOTE="Al Canuck"]Welcome to the insanity that is 02's! 2002FAQ.com is a great place to hang out and learn everything there is to know about 02's. I've got 6 of them at my shop right now, and another being dropped off today. Let me know if I can help you out at all.

Roy, your project sounds awesome! Be sure to check out European Car if not Bimmer as well. There has been a couple of write ups on a guy who put together an incredible S14 powered 2002. This car was done top to bottom in incredible detail.
I have dreams of one day building a period look, modern drivetrain beast E9. Reinforced body and chassis to support an M Motor, or turbo system!
Good luck

If you haven't seen this webpage yet, you should check it out: http://www.my2002tii.com/ .
This guy is doing a nut-and-bolt restoration/modification of a 2002tii, and it's fully documented on his site. Lots of good reading.

Thanks Stuart... that's a very informative site. Hope it doesn't take me that long, but I'll bet it takes longer than I'm anticipating.
