Any modifications needed for that one on 535? Does anybody run one? I am looking at this kit, would I need anything else?

http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=96596

Thanks.

Bavauto has two kits they say work but at a much much higher pricing than that one. I sure hope that one will work! I think there's are like 140.00 or more.

That's definitely the next shifter I'm put in my car. I've got an e36 m3 one in the car right now and it's only ok. I have already ordered all of the new shifter parts except for the lever. Maybe in the next few weeks I'll actually get around to ordering it and trying it out.

Yup, lever comes out pretty easy. The issue is that most people need to replace almost all of the shift hardware and that is a little more of a pain, but definitely not that bad.

People could even make it ten times easier using the billet bushings with circlips that many of the better shifters come with, no using a special tool to get the plastic bushing in the carrier out anymore.
Im happy with my John S modified B&M shifter, no shift throw!

That's right Jay! Good of you to remember. I currently have a z4 2.5 in my eta and the M5 is getting the shifter from an X5 3.0. It's the short throw of the e36 m3 with a longer upper section bent towards the driver. It means quicker gear shifts since it's closer to the wheel. Since the M5 is ostensibly just for driving fast and tracking, it gets a race style shifter.

You'd still have to get the plastic bushing in the carrier out anyhow. Got a diagram of these "billet bushings" you're talking about?

They come on some of the aftermarket shifters, some have bearings inside them, im not interested in them but i think Carr Industries has them for the shifters, its too damn harsh for the street, even for me, i took mine out and opted for the stocker plastic insert. Alright
Its annoying hearing a dzzzzzzzzzzzzz sound when driving.

My shifter came with one (from the B&M website)

Are there any DIY documents for rebuilding the shifter? I had my car on the lift today and it doesn't look bad as long as I don't have to touch the front part of the shifter rod that sits parallel to the exhaust and disappears in the front of the transmission.

Also, do you have to bend z4 shifter to get it to original positioning?

Thank you.

I got the Z4 3.0 as well. The lever took maybe 20 min, haven't done the front part yet. Very nice upgrade!

Got mine from Mr. Haygood for a great price!

I've got a z4-3.0 shifter behind my g265, and love it. It seemed a little stiff at first, but now feels nice and smooth. Second gear is now in the neutral position, but I kind of like it that way, it puts the shift pattern a little farther away, and seems to be right where my hand falls. Also, the z4 shifter is noticeably shorter on the top side, which I think looks a lot better. I had a little trouble getting the leather shift boot to fit properly because of a lack of space between the thick part of the shifter and the bottom of the knob.

Do it, I doubt that you will be unhappy with it.

I had it in my 85 and I'd agree with most of what is said here.

But now for a warning:

Because it is so short topside, shifting is hard and notchy, so it is rough on all the bushings underneath. I even thought of getting a weighted knob to help out because I did enjoy the very short throw, but then bought the 86.

Enjoy,

dj

From whom did you order it?

As an aside, I installed an e36 M3 shift lever and new associated bushings in my e30 Cabrio, a very nice upgrade.

The use of X5 levers looks interesting, I may have to try one.

Are the Z4 shift levers factory bent or straight?

One further comment, I don't have the pic to show it, but the stock shifter is about a 10:1 ratio, so even the Z3 1.9 would be a huge change. Of course new bushings might be a big change too. Wink

I see three shift levers listed for 1st Gen X5 3.0's.
These two for up to 09/2003
25111434624
25117543190

And this one for 09/2003 to 03/2005.
25117540036

Anyone know the differences?
