After searching previous posts it appears that an AFM/MAF is not needed at all IF you have the right electronics to replace it with and are willing to do some programming/tuning. I still have a couple questions:
1. Does the wide-band O2 sensor replace the existing one and the meter splices into the circuit - reading the same signal the ECU sees?
2. The Split Second kits appear to use Ford MAFs because they use variable voltage instead of frequency - isn't there a Bosch MAF suitable for the M30? I know that RS4PRO3 used one for his M20-based engine.
3. Can I plug this stuff (wide-band O2, PSC1-001 calibrator) into my stock system to get a baseline before I start tweaking? |

1.I used an inovate motorsports LC-1 wideband which has a programable narrowband output to keep the ecu happy, then the other output goes to the gauge.
2.ya I used an E36 m50 MAF, with an Apexi SAFC piggyback, which should also work just fine with an M30 engine
I beleive the apexi piggyback could be used to completly get rid of the AFM or a MAF. As it can tweak many different air type inputs, such as a pressure input like MAP. |

Go stand alone ECU, ditch the Moronic, and you can use a MAP.
MAP is way cool and you will have NOTHING attached to the intake. I happen to have a turbo charger, W/A intercooler and then the TB. The turbo charge more than makes up for the restriction though. |

I do agree with going standalone, I'll be putting megasquirt on my m20 once I finish building the multi-throttle intake for it.
But it all depends on what your end goals and budget are. |

I *thought* the MAF would be good but going MAF-less like Martin does sounds cheaper (I must be missing something - it can't be that easy). I can get a Ford MAF from ebay for < $50 or cruise Pull-A-Part for $12.
The original goal was very modest - to get rid of the mechanical AFM so I thought finding a MAF with similar inlet/outlet dimension as the stock AFM (for a M30) would be good but I haven't found that info yet.
I'm trying to avoid 'mission creep' but the more I find out the less I can decide |
