btw - and a little off topic,,,, looking up the list of VINs does anyone know what digit 9 represents..
seems to me looking at bmwmregistry.com, that the first 8 digits are for M5 and the last 8 are for the serial number, but the middle digit is all over the place and in no particular order... ?

They call that a "check digit." It's based on a bunch of calculations made off the first 8 digits. If it's 0-9, it's a number. If "10," it's an X.

Have to say that's pretty cool of the OP in that thread. Other folks would just throw it on eBay.
